Union blanked Emery, 6 to 0, on a 51 yard run by Tracy McMullin. The yellow flag haunted the Union Cougars during their encounter with Emery, Thursday, but finally the yellow object stayed in the referee's pockets and Tracy McMullin blasted 51 yards for a touchdown, which gave the Cougars a 6 to 0 region triumph over the Emery Spartans in Roosevelt. Union began knocking on the end zone door early as quarterback Chad Richard connected on an aerial to Ron Ward, which placed the Cats on Emery's 46 and Richard fired passes to Dean Townsend at the 28 and 16 yard line. The ball hit Townsend's hands on the second pass, bounced straight up, but was captured by Townsend for a reception. A number of incomplete passes brought up a fourth down situation situa-tion and the Cats decided to go for the touchdown. Richard's intended receiver fell down in the end zone and the Cougar quarterback was way off on a pass to another Union footballer. It appeared that Richard might have been able to gain a first down if he had kept the football and ran with it, but the incomplete in-complete pass gave the ball to Emery at the 15 yard line with about eight minutes left in the first quarter. Emery was forced to punt the football away and Cory Dye carried the pigskin to the Emery 35 yard line. McMullin darted with the football to the four yard line, but a holding penalty placed the Cats near midfield. A completed pass to Ward placed Union on the 36 and a penalty against Emery moved the Cats to the 21. McMullin carried the ball to the ten yard line and then scampered to the 3 yard line. However, Union was stopped on a fourth down try and Emery took over ownership of the football foot-ball at the 3:20 mark of the first quarter. Once again Emery couldn't get its offensive of-fensive machine out of neutral and they returned the ball to Union on a punt. The Cats took over on their own 40 and a pass to Townsend placed Union on Emery's 23. Townsend gained a number of yards even though one Emery Spartan had his hand attached to the Cougar's uniform. Running plays by Martinez advanced Union to the 14 and 5 yard lines, but a penalty pushed Union back to the ten. Martinez drove in for the touchdown on a ten yard run at the 6:37 mark of the second quarter, but the touchdown was erased due to a holding penalty. Union and Emery footballers staged crashes during passing attempts by the Cougars and Emery took over the ball on its own 16. Union applied heavy pressure on Emery punter, Cory Mortenson and acquired ac-quired the football on Emery's 41. Grant Cook captured a Richard aerial and a face mask penalty placed Union on Emery's 25. McMullin scampered to the 16 and Martinez to the 8, but a penalty penal-ty pushed Union back to the 23. Emery's Monty Olsen intercepted a Richard aerial to kill the shot at six points by the Cats. The Cats nabbed the ball in Emery territory due to a short . punt, but couldn't take advantage of the opportunity and the score at the end of the first half was: Union, 0 and Emery. 0. A pass interference penalty placed the Cats at the Emery 45 and Martinez motored to the 36. Richard gained a first down on the 33 on a three yard quarterback keeper, but Emery nabbed a Union fumble on the 35 yard line. Emery moved into Union territory with a reception by Joe Lund at the 43. The Cats' Don Haslem broke up a pass intended for receiver Larry Rosquist. Emery decided to go for the first down on a fourth down play, but they failed as quarterback, Jerry Cox was sacked and Union nabbed the football on its own 49 yard line. McMullin received the ball, darted around the left end and jetted 51 yards for the first touchdown of the game with 5:09 left in the third quarter. Richard's pass for the two point conversion conver-sion was no good, but the Cats had a lead of 6-0 in the ball game. Two defensive gems late in the fourth quarter helped preserve the 6-0 Cougar lead. Haslem knocked the ball at the last second away from an Emery receiver at Union's 35 yard line and Richard intercepted an Emery pass at the Cougar 35 on a fourth down try for a first down by the Spartans. Union used up the rest of the time on the clock and won the game by the score of 6-0. The Cats are tied for fourth place in Region 9 at 1-3 with Grantsville.
