Show jCT If TROY FULLER Fuller joins Cougars for Freedom Bowl By GARY R. BLODGETT Editor Troy Fuller, an honor student from Woods Cross High School -where he lettered twice in football and three times in baseball - will be in Anaheim, Calif., for tonight's BYU-UCLA Freedom Bowl football foot-ball game. A 6-foot 1, 180-pound defensive back, Troy was recruited by Utah State University and Weber State, along with several junior colleges, after being voted all-region and the team's offensive Most Valuable Player as a wide receiver. He also played free safety on defense. He was a redshirt as a walk-on athlete at Utah State University in 1983 and later served an LDS mission mis-sion to Hartford, Conn. He is a son of Sherman and Linda Fuller, 404 W. 2350 S.. Bountiful. The Cougars and 15th-ranked Bruins will clash tonight (Tuesday) in the third annual Freedom Bowl. The game will be televised nationally nation-ally on Channel 20 beginning at 6 p.m. It will be a classic "rubber match" for the Cougars and Bruins who will be meeting for the third time. In 1983 BYU upset the Bruins 37-35 in the Rose Bowl, UCLA's home field, led by the quarterbacking of Steve Young. Then in 1985 the Bruins ended the Cougars' 24-game win streak in Provo, edging the defending NCAA national champion in the last minute with a score of 27-24. BYU ended the 1986 season with an 8-4 record and second place in the Western Athletic Conference behind San Diego State, the team hosting Iowa in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 30. UCLA has a 7-3-1 record re-cord and ended its season in a tie with Washington for the PAC-10 second place. Although the Bruins are ranked 15th, the Cougars expect to match up quite well against UCLA. The teams played only one common opponent -- the San Diego State Aztecs. The Bruins beat SDSU 45-14 45-14 and the Cougars lost, 10-3. On the other hand, BYU defeated the Air Force Academy, 23-3, a few weeks after the Falcons handed the Aztecs their only league loss, 22-10, 22-10, in San Diego. BYU has won or shared 10 consecutive con-secutive WAC championships and has one of the nation's best win-loss win-loss records in the 1980s with a 74-15-0 showing. This will be the Cougars' llth appearance in a bowl game since 1974, including seven consecutive trips to the Holiday Bowl. Last year the Cougars lost to Ohio State, 10-7 in the Florida Citrus Bowl.
