Show Make your new Year'.s resolution one of getting, staying slim One of the most common New Year's resolutions is losing weight, and that resolution is commonly broken within just one month. Slim for Life, offered by the American Heart Association, can help you stick to your resolution. Classes 'start the week of Jan. 5. "Resolutions represent an all-or-nothing trap," says Susan Ward, registered dietitian at American Amer-ican Heart Association. 'People feel that one slip wipes out months of good behavior. So the first slip is followed by a full-blown relapse." Mrs. Ward suggests, "Don't make too strict a rule for yourself, such as 'I'll never eat ice cream again.' Changing eating habits is like learning to ride a bike," she continues. "If you fall off once, you practice more and learn how to do it better." Slim for Life weight loss classes help participants recognize when a relapse is about to occur and avert it. Other topics included in the ten week course are low fat and meatless meat-less meals, decreasing environmental environ-mental stimuli to eating, positive thinking and developing an aerobic exercise program. Cost for the class is $50, but is reduced to $40 if you pre-register. As an incentive, a $20 refund is available at completion of the class. This includes $10 for perfect attendance and $10 for losing 15 pounds or reaching ideal weight. Those interested may call 322-5601 for more information. Class locations include Humana Davis North Hospital, Davis, Woods Cross and Bountiful High Schools. |
