BLODGETT Jp news editor -O Why not put a "Little Sunshine" into your heart? I know it's difficult when the weather is so gloomy, and life is so drab. But here's your chance --regardless --regardless of the weather or mood of the day. Give a little of your heart and reach into your pocketbook for a donation to the "Sunshine Project." Pro-ject." By doing so, you will help that little girl whose picture you saw in the Clipper a couple of weeks ago. Remember Judith Rodriguez, the little 7-year-old girl from Puebla, Mexico the gal with the badly burned arms? Her picture appeared on the front page a short time ago with a plea for your help. . This is another plea for the same type of help. But llir "iiiii: j V I s ' W THANK you) U j7Ji : T- JUDITH RODRIGUEZ this time it comes from the father of the LDS missionary mis-sionary who found the little girl in a crowded village of Mexico. This is his plea and is being passed on by the missionary's father to the Bountiful City Council and to all those who read this newspaper. Without your help Judith Rodriguez could very well lose her arms to skin cancer. There's already signs of the dreaded disease and Mexican physicians physi-cians say she needs plastic surgery soon. Judith's family can not afford to pay for the surgery and she can not receive the medical attention atten-tion she needs unless there is sufficient money for the operation. Asking for donations in the poverty-stricken poverty-stricken village where she lives is out of the question. ques-tion. This is where Elder Darrell Mangum steps in. Continued on page two Judith needs donations . Continued from page one Elder Mangum met the girl and her family and after hearing of their problems he called home and pleaded with his parents for help. "Judith may lose her arms or die if she doesn't get the needed help," he pleaded. At the very least, Judith would grow up with huge, ugly scars on both arms. But infection is already setting into the three-year-old wounds -- caused by scalding water when she put them into a tub of boiling water. Judith's family needs about $30,000 and this does not include the surgery to be performed by a local plastic surgeon at no cost. Lakeview Hospital has also offered to "cut its rates" for the girl's recovery. re-covery. But in addition to the surgery, there will be weeks of recovery and rehabilitation not to include the transportation and other costs involved in getting her here and back home again. "So far, everyone that would be involved in the project has agreed to cut costs and do whatever they can to help." Ben Mangum, the missionary's father told the council . "But we still need public support sup-port a lot of it." Funds are already pouring in to the Sunshine Project, Pro-ject, P.O. Box 257. Centerville, Utah, 84014. One donation of $50 came from an 80-year old widow who lives alone. An attached note said that this is all she could afford now, but "I will pay more later." Another donation of mixed bills and coins amounting to about $10 was from a little girl who sent the money and a note that read: "She needs this money more than I do." The money was from the little girl's birthday presents. Mr. Mangum said he would like to see schools, businesses, scouts, church organizations, civic groups and others "compete" in a fund-raising project. pro-ject. "We have until the end of May to raise the money and 1 believe that we can do it all $30,000," Mr. Mangum told the council. Based on the population of south Davis County, that would be equivalent to about 50 cents per person. per-son. Of course, some will pay more, and others will not contribute. But I'm with Mr. Mangum, we can do it! P.S. -- Judith is already aware of what is being done so far (as indicated in picture), so let's make that smile even broader. Again, the address for all donations is the "Sunshine Project," P.O. Box 257, Centerville, Utah. 84014. |
