Show Frenchman to address seminar By GARY R. BLODGETT News Editor A world-famous explorer, adventurer and lecturer will address the second annual Parent and Youth Conference, sponsored spon-sored by the Utah Federation for Drug-Free Youth. FOLLOWING THE theme "Utah's Youth. Our Greatest Natural Resource," the two day seminars of featured speakers and panel discussions will be held March 7 and 8 in the Salt Palace, according to Nina Palmer, Federation president. Keynote speaker will be Jean-Michel Cousteau, elder son of ocean explorer, adventurer and environmentalist Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Jean-Michel Cousteau, president of the Cousteau Institute, a non-profit educational and research organization, has "dedicated "dedi-cated his life to the well-being of mankind throughout the world." Much of his talk will relate to the documentary "Snowstorm 1 In The Jungle" and the cocaine trade and its impact on the United States. MR. COUSTEAU and his crew filmed seven hours of drug growing and traffic in the jungles of Peru. The film and commentary commen-tary by Mr. Cousteau will depict its affects on all cocaine users and those with whom the victims associate. He will speak at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 8, in the Salt Palace Assembly Hall. Mr. Cousteau serves as vice president and director of the 160,000-member Cousteau Society founded by his father. He is being sponsored at the Federation Conference by Dan Eastman Chevrolet of Bountiful and all proceeds for bringing Mr. Cousteau Cous-teau to Utah will be diverted into the Society for design and development of education and information centers; exhibits and museums throughout the United States. SHARING THE spotlight as the keynote speaker on Friday Continued on page two JEAN-MICHEL COUSTEAU Frenchman to speak Continued from page one (8:45 a.m.) is Dr. Carlton Turner, President Reagan's deputy assistant on Drug Abuse. Topic of his lecture will be "The War On Drugs in Utah." Opening address and remarks on Friday (March 7) will be Gov. Norman R. Bangerter and Utah's First Lady Colleen Bangerter. Mrs. Bangerter is honorary chairman of the Utah federation and has been very active in the battle against drugs and alcohol abuse among teenagers in Utah. AMONG TOPICS being discussed at some of the workshops both days will be on drug prevention, education, treatment, rehabilitation, understanding, intervention, etc. Friday evening - from 8 p.m. until 10 p.m. - will be entertainment entertain-ment for everyone, both adults and adolescents. |
