Show 9 Out of 10 in Favor American Mothers Want Federal Aid for PisbSk Schools, Pel! Reveals Women across the United States are overwhelmingly in favor of federal aid to public school, it was revealed in a poll taken recently by the Woman's Wo-man's Home Companion. A resounding "yes" in favor of federal aid came from 89 per cent of the 2000 women queried. In other words nine of every ten women from all sections of the country, and from every walk of life want their local schools to receive help from the national nation-al govenment. North and South Agree There was almost complete unanimity of opinion from women wo-men from the north as well as from the south,, and the reaction reac-tion was the same in cities as well as villages. I The one discordant note came from woinpn over 45 years of age. Only SI per cent of this group was in favor of federal aid. A consensus of opinion seemed seem-ed to be expressed by one woman wo-man from California, who said: "We are a United States, aren't we? Children in all states should have equal educational opportunities." Nevertheless as strongly in favor of federal aid to education as most American women arc, their feelings about the method of control differs greatly, i Fund Control Out of the number who voted yes 48 per cent thought the federal government should specify spec-ify the purpose of the .money with state or local boards administering ad-ministering it. An almost equal number 42 per cent thought the funds should be controlled completely by the state. ' An interesting side issue rais ed by the Woman's Home Companion Com-panion readers was the problem prob-lem of standardization in the schools. Differences of Opinion "The third grade should be the same everywhere," says one mother of two children who has moved frequently during recent years- ' On the other hand there was another mother who urged that the United States be careful about standardization in the schools. To allow the government govern-ment to select textbooks, for example, she thinks would seriously se-riously endanger the American democratic way of life. |
