Show Action Heating Up For City Basketball Tourney By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports BOUNTIFUL -- Action is finishing up in the regular league play this week in the Bountiful City basketball program and the teams are fighting for the top four spots and a berth in next week's city tournament. A TOTAL of 32 teams began action back on Nov. 7 in the four different leagues offered and sponsored by the Bountiful recreation department. depart-ment. ' At the end of each season the city also sponsors spon-sors a year end single elimination tournament which is slated to begin on Monday. March 5. The tournament wjlt pick up again on Monday. March 12 with the semi-finals being on Tuesday. Tues-day. March 13 and then the finals on Wednesday. Wednes-day. March 14. All games will be either at the new Bountiful fieldhouse or in the old gym at Bountiful. - THE TOP LEAGUE in the city is the Monday Mon-day night Fieldhouse division which allows college lettermen to play. This is the only league of the four which allows them to participate, partici-pate, and for the third straight year O'Brien Glass has won the league. This year O'Brien went through league play with a 12-1 record, results of this week's games were not available at press time. Second place was still undecided with both Cal Jam and J&D Pearson Tires tied at 10-3 entering this week. Fourth place, and a spot in the tournament, was still up for grabs with Gene Christensen's and Kevin Jensens team lied at 6-8. Other teams are Spectrum Press. Honey Tree and Rob Martin's Club. Once again Feller's Meats has won the Bountiful Gym League and this year they did it in grand style with a 13-0 record. Colonial Building Supply was in second place at 10-3 with Dingleberries in third at 8-5. The fourth place spot in the tournament will go to either Bingham Engineering or the team called Otes who were tied going into this-week.r r- - - OTHER TEAMS in this league were Infotec. Our Gang and Albertson's A team. Jay Baker Electric has a lock on first place in the Millcreek Junior High league with a glossy 13-1 record with the Old Boys in second place with a 1 1-3 mark. Third place seems wrapped up by the Mellow Missle Makers at 9-5 but there is a logjam for fourth place. The A Team and MHP Realty are tied at 7-6 but Kidder Construction still has a shot with a 6-7 record depending on what happens in the final game. Albertsons B team and Thunder Bunnies make up the league., MUELLER Park has to wait until the results of their final game this week to determine their champion. Rainbow Enterprises and Steve Petersen's Club are currently deadlocked at 1 2-2 and since they split in the regular season a playoff would determine the winner. Oasis Sprinklers is next with a 10-4 mark with Jake Radiators getting the fourth berth with their 9-5 record. Murdock Chevrolet. Dave Italisanos team. Baileys Moving and Z Bag ABC are the remaining clubs in this league. The first round of the tournament looks like this. In the Fieldhouse on Monday 3rd place Bountiful Gym will play the 2nd place Mueller Park at 6:30 p.m. First place Fieldhouse then takes on the 4th place Mueller team at 7:30 p.m. followed by the 1st place Mueller team against the 4th Mueller Park Club at 8:30 and finally the 3rd place Fieldhouse against the 2nd from Bountiful gym at 9:30 p.m. IN THE OTHER bracket, which will play at the Bountiful gym. 3rd Mueller Park will test 2nd Millcreek at 6 p.m.. 4th fieldhouse takes on , 1st Bountiful gym at 7 p.m.. 1st Mueller Park battles 4th Bountiful gym at 8 p.m. and finally 2nd fieldhouse takes on 3rd Millcreek at 9 p.m. |
