Show Down To Brass Tacks In Girls Basketball By DAVE WIGHAM ' Clipper Sports BOUNTIFUL It's down to the final re- : gion game for the girls basketball teams in the area and all three local sides are still in the ' picture for a state berth. THE TOP four finishers in each region get the invitation to the state event, which begins next week, and only two of those spots have ; been secured. " . Highland has won the region title with Davis ',' finishing a strong second place, but then comes (he fun and games. Bountiful and Viewmont are currently tied for third place with 4-5 records re-cords while Woods Cross is right on their heels nl 3-6. "AS LUCK would have it the Bountiful and Viewmont sides were to meet this week, with the winner obviously taken third place and a trip to state. The loser of that battle would have to wail for the outcome of the Woods Cross at Davis matchup, if the Cats were to win that battle then a playoff would ensue. However, if Davis wins then both Viewmont and Bountiful would be in the tournament regardless of who won their game. : VIEWMONT 46 EAST 25 : Last time around the Leopards shocked Viewmont on the Vikes floor and left town with a thrilling one point win but this time around the Viking gals were ready. "The girls were embarrassed over that first loss to them and they were waiting for the chance to redeem themselves this time around," admitted a hap-: hap-: py Viking coach Vi Hillman, "we played well, once we got going. We always seem to have a hard time getting going," she added. : :TN THEIR first meeting East got 25 points : from the Taylor girl and this time the Vikes : .were ready for anything she could do, "we ; were prepared to go to a box and one on her but she never became a factor so we didn't use that : defense." Hillman added. This game the Vikes held Taylor to just 6 points. :Tor all purposes this battle was won in the : second period when the Vikes held East to just ' four points. "Our defense won the game for it's," Hillman noted, "it got the fast break going. The one aspect I was extremely pleased with was the fact we boxed out and rebounded - well," she smiled. ; '' HEIDI HUSBANDS led the scoring parade for Viewmont with a game high 18 with Melin-. Melin-. da Davis scoring, another, (0 and Jenny Miller :: chipping in 9. i S-DAVTS 65 BOUNTIFUL 42 ; ' ; 1'he Braves simply couldn't get anything :, gQing against the Darts and their finish was just '. bad. as the Darts held Bountiful scoreless r for the final two minutes of play to ice the victory. j : i"THEY HIT at the first of the game and we couldn't buy a basket," admitted Bountiful L coach Jill Avery, "that got them off to a quick f- eight point lead and we could never catch them." " :Oneofthe main problems for the Braves was ; the fact that their center, Lisa Jones, was pla-" pla-" - jjiied with foul trouble early in the first half and - then teammate Teresa Laita joined her. "Lisa i picked up some real ticky fouls early and that ; didn't help matters having her on the bench," the coach added. ; . HIGHLAND 60 W OODS CROSS 48 Highland was simply too much for the shor-? shor-? tor Wildcats, as they are with just about any : cliib they play, as they quietly but efficiently : kept adding to their lead. :';"THEY JUST slowly but surely pulled away i- frOm us." admitted coach Debbie Peel of the Wildcats, "most of their buckets were on ? second and third shots after rebounds. High- hifid is big. no wait a minute, they are huge, and ; there just wasn't much we could do about it. I i was proud of my kids and the way they ; played." : " ' One of those first year high school players is !: Becky Trimble, who leads the region with a ; 22.8 point average, led the Cats in this loss with a fine 26 point effort. She got help from Stacey "- Pannell and Wendy Warhurst w ho both added I 10. |
