IN THE region dual meets Woods Cross was 4-0 with East at 3-1. Bountiful and Highland were both 2-2 with Viewmont at 1-3. Swimming is a relatively easy sport to predict pre-dict since the times of each race are available and utilizing those times here is a quick glance at the individual races and the favorites. DIVING. This portion of the region meet will take place on Wednesday and if all goes to plan then when the swimmers hit the water on Thursday the Wildcats will already be ahead of the pack. Gregg Brown of Woods Cross, who is ranked rank-ed sixth in the state, appears to have a lock on the title while teammates Steve Pace and Brett Scndobry just might give the Cats a clean sweep. Rulon Glade is another name to keep a tab on in the diving. 50 YARD freestyle. This race is always one of the closest and this year is no exception. Woods Cross will send James Cottrell up against Dan Childs of Highland. A year ago Childs won this event with Cottrell in second, but James, who is ranked filth in the state, is out to reverse that finish. Bountiful's Andy Cook will also battle for the top spot. 100 Yard Freestyle. Four swimmers are within one second of each other in this event and to be honest any of the four could win. Again Childs of Highland and James Cottrell of Woods Cross will match each other with Childs being the defending region champion. Cottrell is ranked fourth in lhe state in this race while Childs is sixth. Rick Barton of View mont and Andy Cook of Bountiful are the other two swimmers who could win. 200 YARD Freestyle. Once again the Wild- with Dave Penrod of Bountiful expected to give him the toughest competition. The Cats will have Bruce Christensen swimming in this event and he'll look to slip in somewhere as will Robert Bridge of Fast. 100 YARD BREASTROKE. This race could be a Wildcat sweep as the three fastest times all belong to Wildcat swimmers. Kevin Wally has the fastest time with Dave Lane and Mike Greene right behind him. The only racer with a chance at breaking up the sweep is Claron Allredge of East. 200 Yard Individual Medley Event: If times hold up then Brian Jensen of Woods Cross, currently ranked seventh in state in this event, should win easily. James Elwyn of Last will have to fight Eric Eiting of Bountiful and Mike Green of Woods Cross for second place. 200 YARD MEDLEY Relay: This figures to be a matchup between East and the team of Bruce Christensen. Dave Lane. Charles Harris and Craig Criddle of Woods Cross. Bountiful should be third with Viewmont and Highland right behind. 400 Yard Relay. This could be a classic since Bountiful is the defending region champions in this race but Woods Cross is after that crown. Joe Eiting. Eric Filing. Ted Quinn and Andy Cook will carry the Braves hopes against Brian Jensen, James Cottrell. John Doty and Richard Carey of Woods Cross. The other three teams will battle for third. THE MEET gets under way at 10 a.m. on Wednesday with the diving and then the swimming swim-ming will get underway on Thursday at 10 a.m. once again. Brian Jensen of Woods Cross, the one to beat in the 20(1 ind ividual nie(lle and 100-ard buttertlv, has a headlong start over the rest of the region. cats have the top individual in this event in John Doty who has the fastest time but Ted Quinn and Joe Eiting of Bountiful are both out for the win. Lance Skidmore of East w ill also be in the picture. 500 Yard Freestyle. This shapes up to be a three man race including the defending region champ Ted Quinn of Bountiful. Quinn. John Doty of Woods Cross and Lance Skidmore of East all have times w ithin tw o seconds of each other. Despite the fact this is the longest race of the meet' it could come down to the final few yards. 100 YARD BUTTERFLY. Brian Jensen of Woods Cross w ill be looking for tw o individual titles in this meet with the butterfly being one of them. James Elwyn of East had the second fastest time but Charles Harris and David Lane, both of Woods Cross, would like to sneak in a second place effort. I0G Yard Backstroke. Take note folks this is one event the Wildcats aren't the favorites. Rather this time Rich Barton of View mont has the fastest time, he's ranked tenth in the state. |
