Show Dear Editor: As an average American parent par-ent I feel it is my responsibility to express my belief that our I Nation must have Universal Mil- j itary Training as presented in ! the American Legion's plan. None of us likes the idea of our young men taking time out from their lives for military training, but if it will help assure as-sure the peace and in some measure mea-sure preserve "our economy, then I am for it. The American Legion's plan for Universal Military Training with its civilian control, offers training to' all young men, thus equalizing the obligation of citizenship, cit-izenship, and at the same time, will provide a powerful deterrent deter-rent to war. Under the Universal Military Training- program there would be many trained, able-bodied men at home deferred from service ser-vice because of occupation, or j dependency status in time of I emergency. These, without di- minishing the efforts of the f or-ces or-ces actually in the field, could be used in the civil defense program. pro-gram. Nations, like people, do not pick fights with those who are strong and ready. Never in the world's history was it more evident that "eternal vigilance is the price of liberty." Sincerely yours, Irma H. Sutteer, Pres District 9, American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Utah |
