Show CLIFF MEMMOTT, Editor Casually Observing ... PARDON US FOR BEING PROUD Sunday your editor rand the entire staff of your home-town newspaper, were honored hon-ored when presented a bronze plaque as compensation for having hav-ing had the best all-around newspaper in Utah during 1954 in Class "B" competition. Utah's 56 weekly newspapers are classified class-ified into two divisions, over 1000 circulation are "A" papers, and under are "B." The Uintah Basin Record rated the "B" honors along with the Price Sun Advocate in the "A" class. . . So please pardon me this week for feeling a bit chesty but, , before I pop the other two buttons off my vest, let me emphasize em-phasize it is you good people who have made what little success we have enjoyed possible so please join us in our little achievement. y I DO YOU APPRECIATE WHAT YOU HAVE? Last Saturday Sat-urday evening at the Utah State Press Association convention banquet honoring the retiring president and all past-presidents of USPA, I heard a stirring address from Dr. Nicholas Nyaradi, a former minister of finance for the Hungarian government before be-fore the coming of the Commies during World War II . . . I wish every American citizen could hear this brilliant professor, profes-sor, diplomat and lecturer give his message. In trying to make his listeners appreciate more fully the blessings that come from living in the greatest country of the world, "God's Chosen Land," as he termed it. Dr. Nyaradi told how he. and his wife had lost their entire families, brothers, sisters, parents, cousins, etc., and his entire fortune. (He was a multi-millionaire before the Commies took over). And how he and his wife came to America penniless and alone how they washed dishes in cafes; swept out buildings, and did anything they could find to earn a few of the necessities of life. . . How opportunity had come to them how God had given them two children, who were American citizens by right of birth. . . His is a stirring story and one that makes you so very, very thankful for your great heritage. . . A story that should reach down into the very bottom of your heart and make you want to do everything possible pos-sible to build up your community; your church; your schools; and your home here in America where Freedom is Free. v E v HAVE YOU JOINED THE AQUALANTES YET? . . . Newspaper readers meet a lot of "special weeks" and "drives." Usually these events are manipulated from a general headquarters in an eastern city, minutely planned and organ ized and built around a trained core of professional donation- 6tt6fS But currently a "week" and a "drive" are underway which bear no resemblance to this national pattern. These originated on a grass roots level and are being conducted con-ducted by amateurs. And they are meeting with resounding success, because they are sincere and because for us they have a vital mission. . We're referring to the current "Colorado River Week ana to the Aqualantes drive. The Aqualantes aim to make every resident of the Mountain West a booster for the long-delayed Colorado River Storage Project. . . The Aqualantes are fighting false information originating from powerful opponets of the river bill. This propaganda is being disseminated with one object to pressure congress inLo rejecting the project or, next best, crippling it by striking Echo Park Dam. . In politics as in war the worst tactical error possible is to underestimate the power of your opponents. The Aqualantes are not doing that that is why they are asking the help of every Mountain West resident. After being licked in the last Congress, all Mountain Westerners appreciate the forces arrayed against us. And these opponents have powerful allies in the small group of mis-directed conservationists who still insist Echo 'Park Dam will "invade" the national park system. This year the Aqualantes intend to tell the American Public Pub-lic the true facts about the Colorado River Storage project. ; The Aqualantes are water vigilantes. They are working to save for our thirsty but fertile country every drop of Colorado River water won for us by our hard-working ancestors. The vigilantes are riding again. They are your neighbors. Join them. 30 |
