Show I Duchesne & Price Pesters Top USali Weelily Confess Roy Gibson, Nephi Publisher Chosen President The concluding feature of the fifty-seventh annual convention of the Utah State Press Association on Sunday at the Newhouse Hotel in Salt Lake City, was the awarding award-ing of citations in various classes to member newspapers, and the seating of newly elected officers for 1955. The highest possible award that can come to one of the fifty-five weekly newspayers in Utah, which are divided into two classes ("B," under 1000 circulation; "A," over 1000 circulation), is the General Excellance citation, and this honor in the "B" class was accorded to Cliff Memmott, publisher of the Uintah Basin Record of Duchesne. In the "A" class, the Sun Advocate Advo-cate at Price, published by Hal MacKnight was rated tops. Awards were made by Charles Claybaugh, chairman of the better newspaper committee for 1954. Vernal Express Rates The Vernal Express and the ; Richfield Reaper tied for second place in Class A. The Springville Herald won third place. In the Class B division the Nephi Times News placed second and the Eureka Eu-reka Reporter third. A special award was presented Cliff Shelby of the Richfield Reaper Reap-er which placed second for the best promotion of National Newspaper News-paper Week of 1954 in a contest sponsored by the National Newspaper. New Officers Elevated to the office of president presi-dent was ROy Gibson, publisher of the Times:News at Nephi, with Max Warner of the Payson Chronicle Chron-icle as the new vice-president, and Russel Innis, Lehi Free Press, was chosen as secretary. Mr. Gibson and Warner were advanced from vice-president and secretary, respectively. res-pectively. Three new directors selected se-lected from Region 1, 3 and 5 were Albert W. Epperson, Morgan News; Jack Warner, Spanish Fork Press, and Norman Fullenbach, Richfield Reaper. Suppor Aqualantes Following an inspiring address on the Upper Colorado Development Develop-ment by George D. Clyde, at the Saturday noon luncheon, members of the association approved the following resolution, and voted to unitedly support the project of getting get-ting the bill approved by the present pres-ent session of congress: A RESOLUTION Be it hereby resolved, that this organization is on record in firm support of enactment of legislation legisla-tion to authorize the Colorado River Storage Project, which provides pro-vides for development of the Upper Up-per Colorado River Basin. We urge the Congress to approve this legislation, leg-islation, because of the great economic eco-nomic benefits it will provide for the states of Colorado, New Mexico, Mex-ico, Utah and Wyoming, and for the nation as a whole. We endorse this project because it will aid national defense, help" the Navajo Indian Tribe, lengthen the life of Hoover Dam, provide water and power for a growing West and yield countless other benefits. Be it resolved further that our respective members show their support for this project by enrolling en-rolling as "Aqualantes" or water vigilantes. Be it resolved further that we as members of this organization do take it upon ourselves to become be-come acquainted with the project and what it means, and that we ask our friends in other states to write their congressmen in support sup-port of the Colorado River Storage Stor-age Project Be it resolved that Congressmen from our respective areas be informed in-formed at once of this resolution and of this action today. This resolution is adopted unanimously un-animously .because the Colorado River Storage Project is in the best interests of all the citizens of this great nation. |
