Show Basketball In The Basin Off To Big Start Friday, January 8 1 Things in the basketball world j will begin to hum about the : state this weekend as most high ! school loops begin active play for the title they hope to win and a trip to the big show next , March at Provo or Salt Lake t City. t Out here in the Uintah Basin it looks like one of the toughest i seasons for several years, as : each of five entries appear to ; be given a chance to win the bunting, and four of the five FRIDAY SCHEDULE Uintah at Duchesne Tabiona at Altamont Pleasant Grove at Union (Non-League) will be gunning for the defending defend-ing Utah Class B champs from Union. A poll of coaches in the Basin shows them picking the Utes from, over at Uintah High . way to cop the title, and the ,! Cougars from Union to finish second. The above deduction is made by sports writers from the big 1 dailies, but if one were to make j a casual jaunt down to Union ' High School and poll the student : body, teachers, players and the ! towns-folk, they might get a : different vote. They believe ' their Cougars will be right out , to Provo come March, playing their hearts out to protect their j title. And surely what would I be true in Roosevelt will be true in Vernal, Altamont, Tabiona and Duchesne. So maybe it is better to wait a couple of months before buying those season sea-son tickets to the big show, because be-cause only one team can win. Squaring off against each other oth-er Friday night will be Uintah and Duchesne in the latter's gym, and Tabiona goes to' Alta-(Continued Alta-(Continued on back cage) Basketball .... (Continued from page 1) mont to test the strength of the Longhorns. If Uintah is to cop the title as predicted, then they must get by the Eagles, and that, ladies and gentlemen, "ain't" going to be easy. You pick the winner up at Altamont both are loaded with seasoned players, and each has a fine preseason pre-season record on their own floors. Tabby was picked to finish fin-ish third, Duchesne fourth and ,Altamont fifth. Is that the way you see it? The Cougars drew a bye, but have lined up Pleasant Grove to make a Basin jaunt to play them another practice game as they prepare to invade Uintah the following week, Jan. 15, for the battle of the ages. It is quite possible Coach Glen Allred might have the service of Gordon Gor-don Eldredge, only regular from the championship team of '53, back in the line-up. Gordon injured in-jured a leg at Park City nearly a month ago, and has been keenly keen-ly missed. His height can prove a great asset up and about the boards, and then he's a pretty fair shot. There is one thing very cer tain, every basketball fan in five communities in the Basin will be out there on the sideline pulling and cheering for thei-favorite thei-favorite team, and applauding that organization that finally comes out on top to represent them at the tournament. And that is as it should be that makes everyone a winner. All games in the league will begin at 6:45 with the "B" teams playing the curtain raisers, rais-ers, and the main games scheduled sched-uled to start about 8 o'clock. |
