Show rs L i J J ? v-' WHAT OUR READERS SAY .... CONSTRUCTIVE OR DESTRUCTIVE i In an article in the last week's Standard entitled, "Uintah "Uin-tah G.O.P. Chief Brands Caravan Car-avan Trip as Political," written by Mrs. Edna Eskelson, goes to much effort to discredit members mem-bers of the Cattlemen's Caravan. After reading a preceeding publication in the Salt Lake Tribune, I called her and carefully care-fully explained that the Utah group, under the leadership of Heber J. Bennion, were stockmen, stock-men, dairymen and just plain ' dirt farmers. I tried to impress upon her the fact that we farmers farm-ers are threatened with a great loss and in many cases, with disaster, because of ruinously low prices and drought, in the face of inflationary prices for what we buy. That the group from Utah was representative of the entire farm situation and cattle was just a small part of it. I thought I made clear to her the fact that the delegation from Utah joined the Cattlemen Caravan Car-avan and gave Secretary Benson Ben-son a separate individual state-j ment, previously printed in the Roosevelt Standard. I assure you that the men who were with me in the Caravan Cara-van were as fine a group of men as I have ever been in contact con-tact with. Mr. Lewis, from Vernal and Dr. Larson, from Roosevelt, seem to bear the brunt of the discreditatory campaign. I would like to say that both of these men were carefully selected because be-cause of their interest in the welfare of farmers. I hope the farmers of the Basin will personally per-sonally give their thanks to these men, for taking 10 days of their time, plus considerable expense ex-pense in an effort to help solve the farm problems. Dr. Larson has spent considerable consid-erable time on a study of the Uintah Basin water situation, also much research with the thought in mind of some industry indus-try that would supplement the farmers' income. I wish that other business and professional men would put forth as much effort in the interest in-terest of the farmer. Elmer B. Yergensen |
