MERLE COOMBS . . . 80th Birthday Anniversary 80th Birthday Is Celebrated by Mrs.MerleCoombs Mrs. Merle (Pruie) Coombs celebrated her 80th birthday Sunday Sun-day at her home, 110 East Second South, Pleasant Grove. The event passed quietly with no special celebration, . exoept the numerous numer-ous friends and neighbors who called during the afternoon and evening, Mrs. Coombs was born in Manila Man-ila (then North field) Feb. 8, 1879, the daughter of Joseph W. and Louisa Hawley Halliday, pioneer pio-neer residents of the Pleasant Grove area. She was the fourth In a family of eight children. She attended thte Manila grade school and later the Pleasant Grove grade school after the family moved to Pleasant Grove in 1894. In 1899 she married John H. Coombs, who was teaching in the Pleasant Grove schools. The couple moved to Salt Lake City in 1903 when Mr. Coombs became be-came prinoipal of the Lincoln School. Mr. Coombs died in 1924 while principal of the Salt Lake City East High School and Mrs. Coombs returned to Pleasant Grove in 1928 to care for her aging father and mother. Since the passing of her parents, she has continued to reside here, Mrs. Coombs has been active in the Primary and Relief Society So-ciety for many years. She is the mother of two sons, Virgil H., Pleasant Grove and John Wendel, San Francisco. She has a grandson and two great granddaughters. |
