Show " " - l Citizen, Press, Review, Wed., May 14, 1986 -- Page 11 Local students win in art competition Rachel Norman, a senior at American Fork High School, took "Best of Show" in the annual Utah Pageant of the Arts sponsored Youth Art competition. She will receive a $100 savings bond. Other local winners included Peggy Wheeler, a seventh grade student at Pleasant Grove Junior High School, and Melissa Peck, a fifth grade student at Sego Lily Elementary School in Lehi, both of whom won Sweepstakes awards Mike Spears, a tenth grade student at American Fork High School, was one of seven Award of' Merit winners. Geri Draper, competition chairman, said over 1,000 entries were received in the competition from students from schools from as far away as St. George and Brigham City. This year, for the first time, in addition to the "Best of Show" award, four "Judges Awards" were given, said Marcia Peterson, Youth Art Director. These went to students in three divisions kindergarten through sixth grade; seventh through ninth grade; and tenth through twelfth grade. Each of the winners of the Judges Award will receive a $75 savings bond. There was also a sweepstakes award given in each grade, kin-dergarten through 12. Winners of these awards will receive a $50 savings bond. Winners are to be notified by mail or telephone, with awards given at the Pageant Guilt night on June 14. Entries in the competition will be on display at the Youth Art Exhibit --held in connection with the Utah Pageant of the Arts June 9 through 'July 18. X Betty N. Brady, chairman of the board of trustees of the Utah Pageant of the Arts, said judges were impressed by the quality of work entered in the competition. Jimmi Reyes, Springville artist, stated it is a great feeling to see the young people with such talent. Brett Applegate to manage Golden Corral s N Brett Applegate is the new manager of Golden Corral Family Steak House. Applegate says he joined the - Golden Corral organization the first of the year, training in the Kearns restaurant. He managed the Orem firm for one and one-ha-lf months, coming to American Fork the first of April. Born and raised in Indiana, he moved to St. George during the summer of 1974, and to Cedar City two years ago, graduating from Southern Utah State College with a degree in business administration. His wife Dorothy and their three children will join him in the area as soon as school is out. Applegate says Golden Corral is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and he plans to be active in the organization. He says recent menu additions at the Golden Corral include hot vegetables at the salad bar, and fish filets. At nt, Dr. Pyne is Administrator ersonnel Services for the ct. The retirement will take on July 1. Pyne began his career in His church and civic activities include a long list of service. Along with numerous leadership positions in his church, he has been a member and chairman of the Scera Board, a member of the Orem Kiwanis Club, and member of the Orem City Planning and Zoning Commission. His professional af-filiations include: the state and ition in 1951 as a teacher at In High School. He moved to High in 1956 and was named ipal at the Lincoln Junior High .1 in 1963. moved to Orem High as the ipal in 1964, where he ined until 1978. At that time, he ne an administrator with the ct as the supervisor over the schools of the district. He med ' the duties of Ad-itrat-over Personnel in 1983. Pyne is a graduate of Lincoln School. After graduation in he served in the U.S. Army-Ai- r b as a navigator, on 7 and in the European ter of Operations. His college ation was taken at BYU, where olds bachelor's, master's and ir's degrees in education. local education associations, Phi Delta Kappa, the Utah Association of Secondary School Principals, the Northwest Accreditation Com-mission, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Clifton and his wife, Clara, reside in the Orem area. History Fair winners announced Nine area students and one teacher were selected as winners at the Utah State History Fair, held at the University of Utah last month. More than 400 students in the fourth through twelfth grades from 30 school districts throughout the state participated. Winners from, the junior and senior divisions are now eligible to participate in the National History Fair in Washington, D.C. in June. Honored were: Thomas Gardiner, Shelley Elementary, American Fork, third place, primary division "Early Utah Indian and Mormon Relations." Shae Johnson and Tara Johnson, Barratt Elementary, American Fork, First Place, primary division, for "Where's the Train. " Michael Schmuhl and Janette Schmuhl, Barratt Elementary, American Fork, Third Place, junior division, for "Freight Trains; Conflict and Compromise." Marcus Williams, Grovecrest Elementary, Pleasant Grove, Third Place, primary division, for "The Gettysburg Address." Margaret Ann Worthington and Kisha Clark, Meadow Elementary, Lehi and Ricky Harper, Shelley Elementary, American Fork, were recognized for quality use of m aps in History Fair projects. Jonathan Katz, Meadow Elementary, Lehi was one of 10 teachers recognized for their contribuitons to the History Fair. Highland Fling Queen entries due Local girls ages 12 and older are invited to compete in the Highland Fling Rodeo Queen Contest Satur-day, May 24. The contest will include per-sonality judging at 1 p.m. at the home of Jennie Spykes in Highland, and horsemanship competition at the American Fork Arena. Contest entries are due before May 21. . Following the contest, there will be competiton in western pleasure class, tandem bareback and jackpot barrel racing.
