The first nondrug measures generally used include the restriction of salt in the diet, moderate exercise and weight reduction in those who are overweight. If nondrug measures do not provide adequate control, medicines may be used. Diuretics ("water pills") are the mainstay of drug therapy in high blood pressure. Almost 40 percent of hypertensives will respond to diuretics and need only take this one medicine type. Diuretics increase sodium ex-cretion from the body by blocking sodium reabsorption at the kidney. As sodium leaves the body, so does some of the water in the blood stream. The loss of water helps lower the blood pressure. Diuretics also lower blood pressure by other mechanisms that are not com-pletely understood. Many physicians look for a drop in blood pressure after three weeks of diuretic therapy. If the decrease is not adequate, other medicines may be added such as those which inhibit the actions of the nervous system or those which relax the blood vessels. These drugs seem to work best, if the diuretics are continued. Don't forget your fishing license Nothing can ruin a well meaning fisherman's day more than having an officer seize his fishing gear and leave him with a costly citation. People should take the time to make sure they have a 1986 fishing license before leaving home. Record high arrest rates so far this year have resulted in some concerns by conservation officers of the Division of Wildlife Resources. Fishermen are taking advantage of winter and spring fishing op-portunities in ienreasing numbers, and that's the way it should be. But, for a ' number of reasons some sportsmen choose to take a chan ce or simply forget that before they fish in 1986, they need to pick up a new fishing license. The consequences can be somewhat severe. The public is taking a very expensive chance. An average trip to the judge for fishing without a license can cost an in-dividual $50 or more, plus the in-convenience, seizure and possible court confiscation of fishing equipment.' A 1986 fishing license is very important. Nobody should leave home without it. Have it with you while fishing.
