Show Teems fix M eonvertilble The boys are planning a painting party and will paint flames on the sides of the car in the near future. They christened the car recently in Nortons parking lot using a bottle of Dr. Pepper. They named it 'Carcass". Phil calls the car, "Pretty Funky Brewster," but most of the crowd refers to it as "Vert". The vehicle is definitely going to have to be stored indoors in winter as it does not have any kind of a top at all. The upshot of all this is that with a little creativity, a bunch of teenagers, and a long, hot summer, a lot can be accomplished. At least a lot can be done to save the life of a forgotten automobile that still has some good miles left in it. By MARCELLA WALKER If you are a teenager and you need something to keep you occupied during the long summer months, what can you do? Well, a group of kids in Pleasant Grove and one from Lehi, decided to make a convertible this summer and they did. It seems that Brian Schramm of Lehi knew where they could buy a 1973 Chrysler New Yorker that had just been sitting around for three years. Brian got one of his Pleasant Grove buddies, David Biggs, to help him buy it. It cost $75 plus three lawn mower engines. Other friends, Jennifer Williams and Craig Chadwick, donated to the cause, and Phil Chadwick and others assisted in the fix-up process. First off, the guys cut the top off the car to make it a permanent i convertible. The undistinguishable j color of the vehicle is termed j "Urban Camouflage" by the j owners. j They put carpet on to cover the raw edges where they cut the top off, tuned up the car, put on new brakes, rewired some of it and put a rumble seat (sometimes called Rambo Seat) in the trunk. The car has passed inspection and is used on a regular basis by the crowd to attend drive-in movies and go "cruisin' " and when they have "Big Gulp" attacks requiring a trip to the convenience store. The car has a dashboard light which is attached to the top of the dashboard and illuminates so much - . s , , fy ' - P -"i W 1 The "car" makers include, L-R, Brian Schramm, David Biggs, Craig Chadwick, Jennifer Williams, Lari Walker, Phil Chadwick, Kendall Chadwick. that sometimes they cannot see out. This same light contains the dome light which no longer has a place to go so they just pass it around to whoever needs it. It is operated by a pushbutton. Every light on the car comes on when they push on the brake so everyone knows they are coming. They took the air conditioning out since they didn't need it anymore. The boys are pretty sympathetic towards the car. They said that when they went to buy it, trees had grown up through the wheel wells since the car had been sitting for three years. Brian said he couldn't see any sense in just throwing the car away when it could be put to some good. If it ended up as junk when they were through, it would be no worse off than it already was so they "rescued" it. They put in the rumble seat in the trunk so that the car would hold more people. It has a capacity of 11 which it holds regularly to go to the movies. Brian said the car is not stored at any one house too long so that no one's mother get's too mad about having it around. |
