Nielsen named PG employee of month Lane Nielsen was surprised last Tuesday night when the Pleasant Grove City Council named him as Employee of the Month. Lane began working for the city a number of years ago as a parttime employee. He later became a full lime worker. Frank Mills, Public Works Director for the city, said that Lane has a lot of initiative and doesn't need to be told what to do. He took over the street sweeper and has learned how to maintain it. He does a lot of work on his own time and has saved the city a considerable con-siderable amount of money with his perseverance and initiative. Lane enjoys gardening in his spare time. In other action, the council heard from Mike Swallow of the State Dept. of Personnel who gave information in-formation on the services offered by the dept. to the cities. He explaiaed that their program began in 1970 but no longer has federal funding. They have assisted over 100 jurisdictions in Utah. Their personnel management services can be done on a retainer basis or by the project. There is also an option for a retainer on an hourly basis. They can assist with anything related to the complexities of personnel per-sonnel managment. Mayor David Holdaway indicated the city would be interested in organizational development, compensation, job descriptions, etc. A citizen, Ellen Peterson, addressed ad-dressed the council about the beauty of the city entrances and the city buildings because of the work of Paul Giles who cares for all the city flowers. She said friends of hers from all over have commented to her about the beauty of the entrances. en-trances. She said she had never seen Paul when he wasn't working diligently in the city flower beds. Mayor Holdaway said the city appreciates what Paul does and the extra touches he does and the fine example he sets. Paul accepted the kind words and asked if the city council would go along with an idea to start a drive to have a 30 foot tall flag pole installed at the west entrance to the city. Mayor Holdaway said he thought a civic club would jump at the chance to do a project like that. One of the councilmen also mentioned that the flag pole at the old city hall could possibly be moved to that location. The city council will hold a public hearing on Sept. 2 to discuss a request for rezoning the area from 300 East to 700 East between 100 North and 300 South from Rl-12 to Rl-8. Councilman Dave Faux said the request was made because there are only a few lots remaining in this area that are large enough to meet the requirements for the present zone. He said the concern about the construction of duplexes in this area has been practically eliminated because only four properties remain in the area that are even large enough to hold a duplex. He added that changing the zone would not open this up for more multiple dwellings but would allow some of these smaller lots to be developed. There are about 40 lots still to be developed in this area and bout 30 of these still would not be large enough for the Rl-8 zone requirements. One of the councilmen said he would rather see a nice small house on a 60 foot lot than a field of weeds. Mayor Holdaway reported that the Tri-K Company has been able to get insurance and the agreement was signed with the city to lease the old treatment plant on Sam White's Lane. |
