Show Flyers take seventh in national meet Leaving as the state champions of Utah's 15 and under Girls Fastpitch Softball, the Top Ten Flyers returned five days later from Souix Falls, South Dakota claiming seventh in the nation. Playing six games against the top teams in the country, the Flyers gave up only eight runs in the tournament and scored 21 runs themselves. In three games the Flyers shut out their opponents. The games were tough and tight, allowing no room, for slumps, mental errors or anything less than 100 percent performance. The Pleasant Grove team had two games that were won in the 6th inning with one run while holding both Des Moines, Iowa, Panthers and Lake Jackson, Texas Chaos scoreless. Teams were not seeded, and coaches 'drew' for their opening opponent during a social held for all participants the n ight before tournament play began. Fans, players and coaches were proud and excited following the opener against the Redan, Georgia Bandits in which, the Flyers scored 15 runs , shutting out the Bandits, with every Flyer having some playing time. One bad inning against the Baton Rouge, Louisiana Patriots cost the Flyers the game and they lost by a score of 4-0, but bounced back to win three more games, (1-0) (1-0) (3-2). Observers in the stands were complimentary, commenting that it takes an oustanding team to 'send home' a California team, which is just-what the Utah team did in defeating the Sacramento, California Express by a score of 3-2. . In the final game, Julie Trane hit ' a home run with Lisa Hall on base which scored two runs to tie up the game. However, it was not quite .enough as the Blue Birds from yancouver, Washington scored one more in the fourth inning which proved to be the winning run. Many outstanding plays contributed con-tributed to the team effort and coaches Lane Scott and George Storey praised the team while noting that in their opinion the Flyers could play with any of the teams there. Thanks are expressed to all individuals in-dividuals and businesses who contributed in any way to assist the local team in a very successful year 'and the Flyers express gratitude for the opportunity to represent Utah and Pleasant 'Grove in South Dakota. |
