It's taken several years and lots of hard work and dedication, but tennis in Pleasant Grove is m aking a name for itself. The past three years at the high school, both the boys and girls teams have either finished first, second or third in region play. They have then continued on to state and have finished high individually as well as a team. This years girls team took seventh in state while the boys ended up in fifth place. This summer the younger boys, who will soon be playing for the high school, had a great summer. They went undefeated in the Utah Valley Tennis League. Their record was 8 wins and no losses. The 14 and under boys team is coached by Paul Schoonover and David Jacklin. David just finished his freshman year at Dixie College. While at Dixie, David enjoyed went undefeated throughout the season. Another plus is that all but one of the boys will be back on next years team. A second team from Pleasant Grove also dominated their respective tennis league. The 15 to 18 year old girls team also went undefeated. They beat Orem, Heber, Springville, and Lehi. The team was coached by Angie Hales. Angie is a top-rat- e tennis player for P.G.H.S. She had a great junior year, finishing second place in state. We are looking forward to her senior year. Most of these girls will be on this year's high school tennis team. Their season starts the end of August. Summer League Tennis Champs are, L-- front, Jeff Schoonover, Chris Bezzant, Brett Banks, Greg Larson, Jason Williams, Russell Bezzant, Ryan Harris. Back, Jeff Bezzant, Danny Schoonover, Justin Jacklin, Brett Hampton, Glen Montgomery, Erik Jacklin, Wade Doyle and Coach David Jacklin. playing on the tennis team. He earned a scholarship because of his great success as the "number one" singles player at P.G.H.S. Before coming home for the summer, David earned a trip to Texas to play in the Junior College National Tennis Tournament. While in Texas, he won his first three matches before losing out in a close fourth match. The local boys team defeated Provo, Orem, Manti, Spanish Fork, and Springville. The first team Tri-Citi- lost to was the Bingham Miners. The Miners pounded them 10-- 4 at Murray's Ken Price Park Aug. 11. Tri-Citi- got on the board first when Jeff Harris fired a two-ru- n homer in the opening inning. s' lead vanished in the third when Brad Orr's triple put Bingham up Picking up four more runs the next inning, the Miners put the game . away. Stung by that defeat, Tri-Citi-came close to getting eliminated the next night as Tooele led them 7-- 3 in the seventh inning. Before Tri-Citi-could score a run that frame, they got stung with two outs. Even though the situation looked hopeless, the Tri-Cit- y boys did not give up. David Carlson triggered a shocking comeback with a single, which was the first of five straight hits. A three-ru- n homer by Harris put Tri-Citi- up and Chris Her-mans-scored on a double error to help lock up the win. Wednesday night was a time of lost opportunities for the Tri-Cit- y boys as Kearns beat them 4--2 Making nine hits in the game, Tri-Citi-grabbed a 2-- 0 lead in the first. However, Kearns chalked up four runs in the third before suffering its first out. Save for that one inning, Tri-Citi-managed to hold its opposition scoreless. But while the Utah County team did play good ball, it had a frustrating time of trying to regain the lead. In the fifth, for example, Kearns' Troy Dalley's capture of a Dion Bezzant fly ball resulted in a double play. As if that were not bad enough, s' hopes of winning on a three-home- r vanished in the seventh when two Tri-Citi- men on base watched Kearns center fielder Troy Kehoe tag Harris' fly ball just before it could fall outside the park.
