Nielson sisters all in rodeo royalty By KALYN SECRETAN The Nielson girls, Angela, Brenda, Candie and Dustin, have grown up with a love of horses. The girls have all reigned in the rodeo royalty. Daughters of Tim and Deanna Nielson, the girls have been riding horses from the time they were a few months old. They contribute much of their success to friends and neighbors who have loaned their horses to the girls. Angela would like to give a special thanks to Clyde Higginson for the use of his horse, "Piney," who has placed all the girls somewhere, sometime each year. Angela has been in 4-H for the past four years and on the Horsemanship Hor-semanship A-team for the past three years. The team went to state in 1983 and took second place. The team went to state in 1985 and again took second place. Angela won the state 4-H Individual In-dividual Horsemanship contest in Nephi in 1985 and took eighth place all-around in the state. She served as alternate for the Strawberry Days Rodeo Queen in 1984 and 1985 and placed as second attendant this summer. She was Rodeo Queen for Highland in 1984. Angela owns a yearling Ap-paloosa Ap-paloosa filly named "Bandy," which she plans to break and train herself. Brenda feels the main part of her life has been the involvement of showing horses and competing for the past seven years. She served as Pleasant Grove Strawberry Days Jr. First Attendant, At-tendant, Biata Riders Queen, Highland First Attendant, Utah County Fair First Attendant and Lehi Roundup Second Attendant. Trying out for queen in many places, she feels she has learned more each time. Brenda is number one on the 4-H Senior A team and their team took the championship against Salt Lake on August 7. Brenda has over 200 awards and she would like to thank those who have helped her - Bill and Moya Told, Howard and Doris Sorenson, Glade Hilton, Kathy Draper, Karmel Clay and Denise Grange. Candie entered the Queen competition com-petition three years ago and has placed twice for Strawberry Days and once in the Highland Royalty. She served as Jr. Rodeo First Attendant At-tendant with Queen Lori Wood. She came back the next year to win the Junior Rodeo Queen, winning both times on Big Piney. In Highland, she competed on Howard Soren-son's Soren-son's horse, "Thunder," which was trained by Brenda. She loves riding and enjoys the 4-H 4-H under the direction of Karim. Clay. Dustin has been in competition for the past three years. She served as alternate for the Strawberry Days royalty, Lindon Second Attendant, Lindon Queen and Strawberry Days Jr. Rodeo Queen. In showing as a junior in 4-H, Dustin went to region on the B-team and took second place. They were above the Salt Lake A and B team. She would like to express thanks to Bill and Moya Told, Joe Davis, Denise Grange and Ted Carlson for letting her ride their horses. Others who let her ride their horses and supported her are Rex and Diane Newman, Clyde Higginson, Howard and Doris Sorenson and the 4-H leader, Karmel Clay. A special thanks was given to her mom and dad for all the hauling around to shows and tryouts and for teaching the girls how to ride when they were young. Dustin said, "If it wasn't for them I wouldn't be interested in-terested in horses. Thanks, Mom and Dad!" ' |
