Colledge's task was finding graceful, but ugly, step-sisters. Bill Kirkpatrick, Layne Robinson and Mike Magleby faced one of the greatest tests - they had to build a fairytale coach from a pumpkin. These "Impossible dreams" have been accomplished and now "Cin-derella" is ready for even the most discerning ballet patron. The classical ballet will be performed at Timpview High School Friday and Saturday afternoon and evening. The exceptional creative talents of Artistic Director Colledge and her Utah Regional Ballet staff are evident as the choreography, costumes, and scenery for "Cin-derella" are brought forth for in-spection. Stars of the production are Laura Clarke and Corinne Adams who, with exquisite precision, dance the role of "Cinderella". i Hugh Bigney, with flair and finesse, portrays the handsome prince, and a local favorite, JoAnn Brown, will be the wicked step-mother. Their performances are enhanced by the imagery of the sets, the magical quality of the scenery. Bill Kirkpatrick, scenery designer, Layne Robinson and Mike Robinson, builders, have done themselves proud. And the whole production is a sequence of ideas brought together by the artistry of Utah Regional Ballet's staff. "Jackie tells me what she has to have. I do the blueprints and then give them back to her for approval, then we get to work," Kirkpatrick said. "Layne and Mike take all my wild ideas and do it. They sit there with smiles on their faces while I explain what I want, then they take the blue prints and turn them into reality." Robinson and Magleby work at Osmond Studios, now known as Western National Studios, and they're excellent carpenters. "They have lots of savvy, they know about lighting, I'm just amazed that everything I designed got done," Kirkpatrick said. The ballroom scene is "storybook elegant," and according to Kirk-patrick, the scenery is like a framework on a painting. "We just want to enhance Jackie's artistry and Sarah's beautiful costumes." In building Cinderella's fabulous coach, Kirkpatrick, Robinson and Magleby have departed a bit from tradition. "It isn't pulled by horses, or mice, but," Kirkpatrick hesitated, "I hate to tell you too much. You'll just have to see it." Bill, finally, expounded a bit on the coach. "It's built of Lexon, a clear plastic, and it looks like a great faceted diamond, a monumental jewel, you won't believe it. "Mike and Layne are so positive. I'm an artist, but they do un-believable things. They do all stage rigging, sometimes hanging on ladders," Kirkpatrick said. The sequence of events goes something like this: Kirkpatrick designs . from Jackie's specifications. He gives the blueprints to Mike and Layne. They built it and give it back to Bill for painting. He then gives it back to them to put together. They started hammering nails on the scenery for "Cinderella" two months ago, and Bill just finished painting a 24 foot high 60 foot wide backdrop with the fairytale castle in the misty background. Cinderella is a story for all time, a fairytale for all ages. Combine that fantasy with the music of Rossini, Artistic Director Colledge's choreography, the charm of ballerinas Clarke and Adams, and the artistry of three resident magicians: Kirkpatrick, Magleby and Robinson, and you're in for an incredible, even unforgettable ex-perience.
