Show Local girls attend scout encampment Eleven hundred Girl Scouts and leaders trekked to Bacon Memorial Park near Roosevelt, Utah for a three-day encampment June 13-15. Arriving by vans, cars, and buses the Girl Scouts turned the park into a tent city with colorful banners proclaiming their home towns. The girls explored the midway fun at the Country Harvest Fair set up with games of skill, displays and exotic sights. Ongoing demonstrations demon-strations in spinning wool, basket weaving and quilting drew large groups of observers and participants. par-ticipants. The parade of troops brought forth costumes in keeping with the fair theme. An obstacle course set up by Boy Scouts of Duchesne tested the dexterity of girls and adults. Competitions were held in all outdoor skills. Hay rides, a petting zoo and a chance to ride the Convincer, a seat belt demonstration machine, drew long lines of girls. Cameras clicked away as troops posed with the talking Camp Critters. Treated to a real western barbecue bar-becue on Friday the surrounding hills echoed with patriotic songs as the Girl Scouts closed the evening with a flashlight ceremony forming a huge American flag. Troops visited the Dinosaur National Monument and Museum of Natural History in the Vernal area. Charolette Allen, Duchesne, and Phyllis Mecham of Vernal, co-directors co-directors of the Utah Girl Scout Council event arranged for security through the Uintah County Sheriff's Department and Search and Rescue of Vernal. Being in Dinosaurland led to a treasure hunt for large green dinosaur eggs and a melon bust. Girls and leaders taking part in the Encampment from this area were Troops 118 and 490 of Pleasant Grove. |
