Show Review - Wednesday, April 18, 19&4 - page Vikes take 2nd at tri-cit-y meet American Fork came out on top in the annual Tri-Cit- y Track and Field Meet last week. The Cavemen totaled 94 points to second place Pleasant Groves' 72 and third place Ijehi with 10 in the boys division. The Cavemen won over Pleasant Grove and Ix;hi by the score of 85 to Pleasant Grove's 40 and Iehi's 25. First place winners for the Pleasant Grove boys were Hilly Adamson in the 1 10 meter high hurdles; Scott Humble in the ;SO0 Intermediate hurdles; Ron Reynolds in the 3200 meter run; Robert Jolley in the Javelin; Norman and Sterling Tree tied for first in the pole vault and Wayne Eddington won the high jump. For the Viking girls, Jill West won the 800 meter run; Margo Nelson won the 200 meter dash and the long jump; Sara Duvall was tops in the javelin. In a dual meet held Thursday in the best weather conditions of the season, the Pleasant Grove boys got by Wasatch 86-5-4 but the girls were edged by the Uidy Wasps, 69-6- Viking place winners vs. Wasatch. Tennis team first in Region 8 With two victories last week, the Pleasant Grove High School tennis team has improved their record to 5-- 1 and are now in first place in Region 8. On Wednesday Pleasant Grove traveled to Carbon to take on the Dino's. Despite winds of up to 40 miles per hour, the Vikes played great and won 5-- Another road match Thursday at Spanish Fork was a much closer battle and it was to decide the top spot in region. With a great team effort, the Vikes pulled off a close 3-- 2 victory. David Jacklin, Mike Simpson and Scott Beagley came up with wins in the first, second and third singles matches. Coach Paul Schoonover is pleased with the teams' play in his first year as coach. Coach Schoonover feels that if the team continues to improve they have a real chance to bring home a region trophy. Other players for the Vikes a Brady Harris, Mike Clark, Norman Tree, Craig Nelson, Dave Wamii Mike Jensen, Travor Tomlinson Wayne Eddington and Jm, Firth. Pleasant Grove takes on Springville today. Registrations can also be taken to the Recreation Office from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. any weekday. Fees are first child in family, $15; second child in family, $13.50; third child and other children, $12. The first game of the season will be Saturday, August 4, andthete games will be the last week i October. Reminder. There will be k spring season of soccer in Pleasai: Grove this vear. Baseball: one win, one loss A win and a loss in two road games puts Pleasant Grove's baseball squad at 5-- 2 in Region 8 play. In a Wednesday game switched at the last minute from Pleasant Grove to Price to accomodate the Pleasant Grove Junior-Senio- r Prom later this month, the Vikes broke a 1 tie in the second inning with three runs. Once the Pleasant Grove offense started to roll, Carbon couldn't shut it off as the Vikes addefour runs in the third inning, three in the fourth and eight more in the fifth to win 20-1- . When Paul Bronson homered to lead off the third inning, the umpire ruled Branson's bat illegal and took away the run. News of George Brett's episode last summer hasn't reached Price yet. Tracy Flinders had four rbi's while Cory Conder and Jesse Walker had three each in the slugfest. Shawn Story was the winning pitcher, his fourth without a loss this season. At Spanish Fork Friday, Pleasant Grove used three first inning walks, a fielder's choice and a Shawn Bezzant hit to take an early 3-- 0 lead. It was short lived as the Don's picked up four runs in the bottom half of the first inning and went on to win 13-- Matt Norman had a two run home run in the second to boost Pleasand Grove back in front 5r4 but six Viking errors spelled defeat for the visitors. Pleasant Grove played Monday and Tuesday against Springville and Payson before heading south to Las Vegas for a tournament over Spring Vacation. Shane Phillips is the statistical'' leader with a .500 average, 19 hits and 15 runs batted in. |
