Escapee sugar-fed mouse finds candy machines at PGHS down to one half ounce. lie was hyper and his coat was not smooth. His diet was changed again and he doubled his weight to one ounce. When he received the correct food he was sedentary. The junk food diet mouse gained one half ounce to end up at one and one half ounces. He was sedentary for the large amount of the time. He kept his smooth coat. The caffeine diet mouse lost weight. He ended up at one quarter ounce. After he ate he would shake, jerk and climb the cage. His coat was also affected and lost its smooth appearance. This experience was used to help the students understand the importance of nutrition. The Foods II classes at PGHS under the direction of their student teacher, Rebecca Farnsworth and their teacher, Teresa Griffin, have just concluded a Nutritional study conducted on mice. Students were able to observe the physical effects of five different diets. The diets used were: control, high sugar, high fat, junk food, and caffeine. The content of each diet was determined by the students. The control mouse was used as a basis to compare the other mice, and he ate regular mouse food. The high sugar mouse had a diet of: M&M's, fruit loops, cracker jacks, marshmellow, oreos, carrots, twinkies and apple pie. The high fat diet consisted of: pie, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, parmesan cheese, ice cream, beef pot pie, and coconut. The junk food diet consisted of: potato chips, corn chips, candy, french fries, ice cream, twinkies, cookies, and peanut butter. The caffeine diet contained: coffee, coke, chocolate, pepsi and tea. When the experiment started all of the mice weighed one ounce. The experiment lasted two and one half to three weeks. At the end the Sugar mouse had lost one half ounce. He was hyper, lost hair and his coat was not smooth. His weight loss was due to his hyperactivity. He would jump until he finally pushed open his cage and escaped. Twice he escaped and was found again both times, once at the candy machine and the other time in a class room. The control mouse stayed the same weight. He remained healthy with a good smooth coat. The high fat mouse doubled his weight but then he was given the wrong food. He got some of the high sugar diet. He then lost weight |
