Show Review - Wednesday, April 18, 1984 - Page 3 Thieves' make police chief 'victim' each of them denied strongly (with a wink) that they had anything to do with the "theft." Chief Ferre said he was so shocked and it had left him so astounded that he couldn't con-centrate on his work the rest of the day. Of course, his office was off limits for investigation and the tiny desk would have been un- - r" , , nry-,- . ,,,1 comfortable for his tall frame, anyway. The last heard from the chief was some sort of a mumble about get- -ting his revenge. WALKER WK "th. Fire station damaged to avert accident The Pleasant Grove Fire Station at Main Street and Center received minor damage when Fire Chief Frank Mills had to make a sharp turn in a fire engine to avoid an accident. The fire department was responding to a grass fire behind the Skyline Industries on West Center Street when the incident occurred. According to firemen, a motorist traveling west' on Center went around the fireman who was blocking traffic in front of the fire station for the fire engines to pull out. This caused Chief Mills to make a sharp turn to the right to avoid an accident and the engine hit the brick wall at the side of the doors. Some structural damage occurred with bricks being knocked loose from the building. The apparatus on the back side of the fire engine which holds hoses was also damaged. This is not the first time the fire station has been bumped by a fire truck, according to fire officials. On other occasions similar incidents have happened. No damage estimate was available. we I Firemen slate breakfast Spring must really be here! City receives historical grant Mayor David Holdaway has been informed that Pleasant Grove City has been awarded a matching grant of $2,500 from Utah's Certified Local Government4 funds as part of the Department of Interior grant for Historical Preservation to the State of Utah. The grant period is from April 15, 1984 to Feb. 28, 1985, the mayor was told. According to Mayor Holdaway the acceptance of this grant will require the adoption of a historic preservation ordinance and appointment of a historic preservation commission in accordance with requirements of the Department of Interior. J The ' mayor has asked Michael Roper; aresident of Pleas'aht Grove and an employee of the Division of State History, and Drucilla Smith, city librarian, to serve on this committee. Other citizens who would be interested in serving on this five man commission are asked to contact Mayor Holdaway or the city hall. One other member of the committee should be a professional in history, architecture or architectural history. A contract must be signed which describes the work to be accomplished with the grant and assures that other requirements for expenditure of federal funds will be met. In a letter to the city the director and state Historic Preservation Officer, Melvin T. Smith, said that the Utah State Historical Society is very excited about the prospects which the Certified Ixical Government Program offers for greater local involvement in identifying, documenting, and preserving the history and historic resources of Pleasant Grove City, First Security just put $163 million in Home Improvement money within your reach. lft I fJ v uA 1 i ! i I 4 1 L Hach of the 163 offices of First Security has a million dollars to loan for Home Improvements. This second session of the month is generally devoted entirely to public input without a formal agenda. The Career Ladder discussion, in fact, will be one of two items on the agenda. A report on the status of physical education programs in the district's secondary schools will also be presented. Patrons will be free to discuss any item of concern or .interest for the remainder of the meeting. The discussion will include a status report from a district committee which has been working on a recommendation for the im-plementation of the career ladder program. According to Gary V. Keetch, vice-chairm- of the committee and secondary administrator for the district, the concept holds great promise for increasing the at-tractiveness of the teaching profession and improving the quality of education in the public school system. "The system will reward good teachers for being good," said Keetch. "A competitive wage and promotion schedule will be based on performance, not on mere en-durance. In addition to performance pay, the program will provide a complete support system for the training and encouragement of professional teachers."
