Show THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1974 PLEASAMT GROVE REVIEW, PLEASANT GROVE, UTAH THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1974 Viking Sophs Drop Lahi Last Friday In Wei, Sloppy Field by Jack Hill Playing Lehi on a rainy day at Lehi gives the home team a definite advantage. It wasn't enough however, as the Viking sophomores "splashed" to a 22-- 6 first quarter lead and held on to win their fifth straight game 30-1- Kirk Tanner recovered Lehi's second play fumble on the 18 and three plays later Kurt Christensen scored from 3 yds out. With a steady rain drizzl-ing on an already soaked field the Vikes ran for the P.A.T. and Tom Strasburg "ploughed" in for the two points. Lehi returned the Viking kickoff 80 yards for the T.D. The young Pioneer seemed to just skim along the surface with Brent Keetch and Stras-burg unable to catch him. The P.A.T. was missed and the score stood at 8-- 6 for the Vikes It was first and 10 on the Viking 37 following Lehi's kick off. From that point P.G. made an 11 play 63 yard sustained drive with Strasburg going the final five and again pushing in for the two point conversion. The wet ball betrayed Lehi when Mark Ewell recovered fumble No. 2 on the eight yard line. P.G. punched it in the end zone in three plays with Tom "The Tank" again scoring. The attempted point after fell short and the first quarter, dominat-ed 'by Pleasant Grove, ended 22-6- . Suddenly the "tide" shifted to the Pioneers who seemed to get stronger as the rain con-tinued to fall. Lehi scored in the second qurater while P.G. offense sputtered. It was a ball game as the halftime score stood at 22-1- The Vikes momentarily es-tablished control of the game in the 3rd quarter by taking their initial possession and dri-ving 66 yards in 13 plays with Christensen scoring his second T.D. from the four. Late in the game Lehi snap-ped the ball through the end zone giving P.G. a safety and that was the end of the scoring. Strasburg rushed for 95 yards and Christensen, who has been making steady improve-ment, had 93. Clyde Huntsman and Gary Jackson were tops in individ-ual tackles with 4 each. Brett Frampton had two assists to lead in thta defensive depart-ment. Sophs Drop SprsEigifiSSe 32-- 8 , 6th Straight Win by Jack HiU Tuesday was a calm, warm fall day perfect for football. An made it six in a row with a convincing 32-- 8 win over a good Springville bunch. The Red Devil squad scored first on a well executed play-actio- n pass that fooled the P.G. secondary. Springville tried the same play to the other side for a successful two-poi- conver-sion and took the early lead 8-- 0. "Fooled once, but not again" proved to be" the Viking motto because the defense complete-ly shut off the Devil passing game from that point. Craig Walker made a fine intercep-tion to halt one drive while Linebacker Kelly Nelson inter-cepted to stop another. P.G.'s linemen put increas-ingly heavy pressure on the Q.B. with Russell Robinson and Kirk Tanner each dropping him for big losses. With Springville leading 8-- 0 P.G. returned the kickoff to the 32 yard line. A power play on first down went 68 yards with Tom Strasburg getting good blocks and breaking two tackles enroute to the T.D. Kurt Christensen carried for the 2 points to tie the game at 8 apiece. On P.G.'s third drive of the second quarter, Layne Butt hit Gary Jackson with a 25 yard pass down to the six. The of-ficial ruled that Jackson came down in bounds, a call "hotly" disputed by the Springville staff. A "half the distance" penalty moved the ball to the three where Layne Butt step-ped in for the score on a nice option. An attempted run for 2 points came up short. Springville was forced to punt. The Vikes took over on the 50 and went the distance in 5 plays. The last 17 was on a pass from Butt to Jackson that the "slippery" wingback caught between two defenders and darted in for the score to make it 20-- 8 as the half ended. Strasburg scored from 24 yards out to start the third quarter but the point after fell incomplete. Late in the fourth quarter, with Bret Frampton running the Viking offense, Brian Storms did just that. He storm-ed around left end, cut back be-hind great blocking to race 58 yards for the T.D. The sophs came up with 5 TDs but only made good on one point after try or the point spread would have been larger. The squad travels to Span-ish Fork Wednesday Oct. 16 for a 4 p.m. game. Spanish recent-ly defeated American Fork 8-- 6 on a last minute pass on the basis of the games against A.F., the game should be close.
