Show JUDGE IN NO MERCIFUL HUMOR i SELF-CONFESSED THIEF IS GIVEN FIFTY DAYS. Fred Hummell Must Serve on the RocV Pile Three Cases Are Postponed. The morning session of police court was of brief duration, there being but a few offenders present. Petit larceny cases predominated and the judge was in no lenient mood as evidenced evi-denced by tho sentences which he Imposed Im-posed upon those who admitted their guilt. Fred Hummell was the first delinquent delin-quent to feel the heavy hand of the law. He was charged with stealing a . watch and fob belonging to Thomas Bennett, and valued at about $25. Hummell did not hesitate in entering a plea of guilty, evidently thinking that his sentence would bo less severe. se-vere. The court apparently was not impressed with the defendant's demeanor de-meanor and Imposed the rather stiff sentenco of fifty days on the rock Idle. John Lynch was arraigned on the charge of drunkenness, pleading guilty end receiving the customary sentence of $5 or five clays. James Gollghtly. charged with mendicancy, men-dicancy, entered a plea of not guilty and while the court wan considering the case, sought to facilitate matters by begging for a chanco to get out of town. The prisoner was little more successful at "mooching" for leniency than he had been at "mooching" for the price of a drink from a plain clothes policeman, as he was placed under $25 bonds until the arresting officer of-ficer could be present. The case was set for 2:30 p m. Gregor Cicalo was charged with th theft of six strips of carpet, three hammers, a lantern, two saws and fifty feet of garden hose, evidently having hav-ing anticipated general house-keeping. The prisoner was unable to understand under-stand English as spoken by tho municipal mu-nicipal clerk, although he was said to have comprehended other . conversations conversa-tions with oase. A countryman of the man arose from the spectators and asked that the case be continued and that ball be fixed. Owing to the absence ab-sence of Detective Pender, the volunteer volun-teer was Impressed Into the service a? court Intemerler and managed to get from the defendant a plea of not guilty. The judge then fixed his hall at $50 and ordered the case continued. The property stolen belonged to the Oregon Short Lino company. S. P. Dupass, charged with carrying a concealed and dangerous weapon, was represented by council and his case was set for Monday morning. |
