In the arrest of two men here last night, the postofTlce department believes it has captured the headquarters of the Mexican National Na-tional Lottery, and will he able to effectually ef-fectually stop an Illegal business, which has collected many thousands of dollars every month from various sections of the West. When Charles O. Backus was arrested lu his apartments, apart-ments, the officers found many large packages of lottery Uckets, fully addressed ad-dressed and stamped, ready to bo mailed. One of these packages was addressed to Joseph Sanger of 2252 Hickory street, St. I-ouls, and another to John Smith, 1019 Rutger street, SL Louis From the addresses on the packages, tho postofflce department inspectors said they obtained' the names of many of the representatives, throughout tho country, of the lottery. lot-tery. Chief Postofflce Inspector Mayer said last night that the profits of the business had been enormous, and that in his several months of investigation, he had not been able to find any evidence evi-dence that an actual drawing of numbers num-bers had eve,r taken place. Under the name "John Smith." Lint- ner received mall1 at 1019 Rutger street, the home of his sister. A newspaper reporter who asked for "Smith" at the Rutger street address v;as directed to the. South Twelfth rtreet number. There he was met by Lintner, who agreed to get the reporter re-porter numbers for the next drawing, although he said" that he had quit handling the tiiits about six months ago. The, local postal authorities said that they had not been notified of the case. |
