Show ATTEMPT TO ROB ' TRAIN Wreckers Piled Upon Track Ties and Rails at a Curve i El Paso, June 4. A daring attempt was made yesterday to wreck and rob the westbound Golden State limited, the fast overland train on the Chicago. Rock Island & Pacific railroad near Duran, in central New Mexico, Ties and rails were, piled upon the track 'at; a curve, but a freight train which I . evidently had beea overlooked by the robbers, hit the obstruction first. The wreckers fired several shots at the train crew of the freight, then mounted their horses and escaped into in-to the foothills. The Golden State limited, loaded with passengers and carrying through California mall, and the heavy Wells Fargo express was but a short time behind the freight. At the general offices of the El Paso & Southwestern railroad, over tho tracks of which the Rock Island trains are operated, the theory of attempted robbery was scouted.- "The trainmen paid something about having heard shots." said ' General Manager Simmons, "but I don't believe they came from robbers." He added that some empty bottles had been found near the track, and said ho believed the wreck scare was the work of drunken Mexicans. |
