TO BE URGED ON CITY BOARD BY MERCHANTS OE OODEN What in effect is a new slogan, and the substance of which Is "Ogden Beautiful;" has been adopted recently by the Merchants of Ogden, according to information given to a representative representa-tive of the Standard today An effort is being made by th m rchanta to co-operat with the city commission to rid the'eity of unsightly I billboards and other forms of outdoor (advertising that might he offensive to I the esthetic notions of citizens. To this end the merchants have 'sent for copies of ordinances now in 1 1 n e m some of the important eastern citiee which provide for billboards of uniform character and size and also regulate the form of painted adver i -in ; signs on buildings When these copies arrive they will bo submitted to ihe citj commission with a petition for their adoption. In speaking of the plan. President J. S. Lewis of the Merchants of Ogden Og-den said: "Our aim is to have none but attrac-i tive outdoor advertising jn this city, j i tern cities have taken the matter up ami have finally secured regulation and control of billboards and painted signs, so that instead of having a promiscuous pro-miscuous lot of unsightly objects fill the eye with a picture of Inharmony, they have obtained what is really a Bystem whjch is uniform in its application. appli-cation. "We desire to have such a system for Ogden, and we are certain that nearly all citizens feel the same way. I To beautify the city is a duty and we are trying to do our part, but In doing this we do not desire to stamp out legitimate le-gitimate advertising We feel that nil billboards in the city should be uniform. uni-form. "We shall propose the de luxe form of billboards in the ordinances that the Commission Will be asked to pass These boards have columns at each end and are so constructed as to be decorative and attractive. Double-deck Double-deck boards will be taboo, as they are now under present ordinances. There are some billboards in the city now thai should be made to conform to the present law. "Our plan will require lhat all billboards bill-boards now in use will be torn down and replaced with Ihe de luxe form. Paintings on buildings will also be uniform. We have come to realize that beautifying the city is economy. It is also in the trend of progress and tends to make the citizens more contented. The difficulty is to get the system ur. der way. Once it Is established, there will be no opportunity to change it, for public opinion will never let It pass away." Telegrams were sent for the copies of the ordinances this morning and they should be here in a few days. Action wrill be taken as soon as they arrive It is also understood that considerable con-siderable support will be given to the move among the women's clubs of the city, as several of them in the past have taken up the billboard matter from different angles. |
