Show HORSE RUNS RACE i WITHOUT SHOE; BOSTON, . Deo. -2S. A little inside I Grand Circuit history was revealed j '.here by Walter Cox, the veteran horse- j I man. Speaking before the Metropoli-j tan Driving club on Unimportance of i I shoeing in training Mr. Cox said: I "I don't know how to shoe a horse j , and I have seen many men who posed j jas expert farriers make some awful ' I blunders. I remember well a case in! point which happened several years ago. , "Scott Hudson and I were interested .in the trotting stallion Treganlle. I consider Scott one of the best trainers I ever know. Tregantle was shipped to me during the Grand Circuit meeting meet-ing at Columbus. HeJiad not raced well, so Scott and I decided we would change his shoeing. A few days later Tregantle won a race. "When wo got to Lexington we concluded con-cluded that Tregantle Avas worth a I small wager at least. We knew (hat he was shod right. Well, race day came and the checks were down. I went out and won the first heat. On going around the turn in the second heat Tregantle Tre-gantle threw a shoe into the center field, and I guess it's there yet. Of course, I thought we were gone, but i would you believe It, that horse, with . one bare foot, trotted the fastest heat . he ever traveled in his life, and we . won the race. Our shoeing system exploded ex-ploded then and there." |
