Short covering probably contributed con-tributed to the firmness of rails, the relative strength of low grade transportations trans-portations suggesting further accumulation. accum-ulation. Gains of 1 to 2 points were 'made by shippings, oils, and. some of j the leading steels and specialties, but aside from Sumatra, tobaccos manifested mani-fested little of their strength and prominence. Closing was firm. Sales approximated 150,000 shares. Bonds were featured by the heaviness of Liberty Lib-erty fourth 4 Vis at the new low record of 95.S4. Pacific Mail and Marine preferred were the only representative issues to register more than fractional gains in the early stages of today's stagnant stock market advancing 1 to IV2 points respectively. Oils, tobaccos and some of the less important industrials and equipments were moderately higher with United States Steel, but rails were featureless and coppers developed develop-ed reactionary tendencies. Liberty bonds continue to ease but held slightly slight-ly above yesterday's minimum quotations. I Chicago Quotations ! v - -j I CHICAGP, Dec. 7 Removal of some j of the barriers on trading had a bearish bear-ish Influence today in the corn market. mark-et. Values were also depressed by enlarged en-larged country offerings. Handlers expected that receipts hore Monday might aggregate 500 cars. Opening prices which ranged from to lJAc lower, with January $1.30 to 1.30V& and February $1.294 to 1.29, were followed by a decided further setback. Oats sympathized with the weakness of corn. After opening b to c off with January 72 to 731,4c the market continued to sag. Provisions reflected the declines in grain and hogs. Big shipments, however, how-ever, continued.
