"I have been from coast to coast, and believe be-lieve me, boys, the world doesn't begin be-gin till you get on the western side of tho Mississippi and come this way." And the sentiment was duly seconded second-ed by a chorus of others, who wore stuffing coffee, doughnuts, cookies . and candies before train time. j This feeling seems to be the general gen-eral and prevailing one among all the men who go through. All the canteen workers seem to have time, no matter how busy, to stop and ask a question or two, to give each .man in service a little personal attention, and, finally, to let each one know that he is worthy of all the gratitude and thought which may be given in passing. Do the boys appreciate It? Well just take a mlnuto off somo morning, morn-ing, when the 10:10 train comes in and go down to the canteen and have a look for yourself. You will never doubt again whether soldiers are human, or whether they retain their homo-loving instincts after a few months of tho hard service they sec. They are softened, soft-ened, and tendered, and the slightest attention reaps a world of thanks, for they are happy to know that they are yet remembered, somewhere beyond their own fireside. 1 |
