Show I f GRAVES REGISTRATION SERVICE j NEW BRANCH OF AMERICAN ARMY I WITH THE AMERICAN ARMY IN FRANCE, Dec 14, (By the Asso- ; elated Press.) Tho organization has ; been announced of a branch of the .army whoso sole duty Is to arrange for the proper burial of our soldiers : who died In France and for tho care II of their graves. The now organization Is known as J tho GraveB Registration Service. It Is I under the direction of a regular army I major and is a division of the office of j tho chief quartermaster and through : that office is directly responsible to I Gonoral Pershing. Tho service chief j also Is superintendent of all Ameri- ' can cemeteries In Europe and as such is responsible for their proper care and maintenance. , A unit of two officers and fifty men , j3 . is provided for each army division. They are to arrange for proper 1 burials, In their respective divisions and also to take care of the divisional j. , cemetery. Colonel Commands Headquarters. H .', There also is a headquarters do-H do-H tachment In command of a colonel and m 'I reserve battalions to be available for ! ,t attachment with immediate assign- r ment whore needed, j The American expeditionary force 's has been assigned land by the French I authorities for use as semi-permanent, j or temporary cemeteries, and officers ) have just returned from a trip through the country locating cemeteries which may bo used wholly or partly for American dead. Already two large burial plots have been fenced in and posted and a number of small ones arranged near the front as temporary resting places for tho. bodies of Americans Amer-icans who may bo killed in action. Each Grave Marked. Each grave In the main cemeteries will havo a cross at the head and an iron marker. Temporary graves will ! be marked by pegs and a cross or other headstone. On each also there will be an Identification tag and a card giving the soldier's rank, the organization organi-zation to which he belonged and the circumstances of his death, which information in-formation also will be forwarded immediately im-mediately to tho record office, where the records will contain the location and a picture of tho grave for the benefit of relatives. There will be a continual inspoc-, tlon of all cemeteries to ' make sure that they are properly kept. |
