Heavy French and Arnerican artillery preparation preceded the advance of the Infantry. Soon after the activity started tho Germans attempted a counter-attack but were ropulsed by the allied artillery. ar-tillery. . Several airplanes co-operated with the French just north of St. Etienne in beating off the German infantry in-fantry and machino gunners. Tho principal resistance was with machine guns. The troops advanced over yellow clay ground and Xhe clay, blending with the khaki, made tho American uniform a difficult target for the Germans. Ger-mans.
