The demand for something some-thing more than unconditional surrender from Germany is becoming intensified in the newspapers here. Viscount Middleton, former secretary of state for India, asks that the Allies make a declaration that peace shall not be made until retribution is exacted from German towns for vandalism in France. The Times says that German towns like Hamburg and Frankfort must be marked down for ransom in return for French and Belgian towns wantonly destroyed. STOCKHOLM, Oct. 10. There is a persistent rumor here that Emperor William has abdicated. LONDON, Oct. 1 0. British Indian infantry Tuesday. WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 0. From one of the European neutral countries today a report reached the state department that General Ludendorff has suffered a physical collapse and relinquished command of the German army. AMSTERDAM, Oct. 10.-A revolt has broken in Bruges, Belgium, the populace having risen against the at-' at-' tempts of the Germans to deport the civilians, accordin- to Les Nouyelles. German troops used their guns and killed or wounded numerous Belgians. I (By The Associated Press) Vigorously pressing the advantage gained by the breaking of the German line between Carabrai and St. Quenlin the British, French and American i armies have widened the great wedge in this area to such an extent that the German front from Rheims northward I seems to be collapsing. The disintegration of this line is being hastened by the vigorous strokes delivered by the French along the Aisne, while further the German loft flank in the active battle area is being hammered hard by other French forces and the American first army, in i the Champagne, Argonne and Verdun regions. r- Most telling in , Us immediate-effect t is the thrust by Field Marshal Haig southeast of Cambrai, where American troops also are operating. The British Brit-ish commander has swung the main direction of his drive northeastward and has already pushed to within two miles of Le Cateau. The taking of Le Cateau which seems imminent, will cut the last of the lateral railway lines connecting the German northern front with the great salient of Laon and inevitably will force the evacuation of the entire Laon area. Before Le Cateau the British are on a line fully ten miles in advance of the longitudinal line . running between Cambrai and St. Quenlin, having swept through the greater part of this area in great strides, driving before them a disorganized enemy. The resistance of the Germans was reported to be stiffening during the night, however, indicating that a stand might be made in an effort to sav.e the railway junction as long as possible from capture. Meanwhile the French are pushing toward the Oise in the direction of Guise. Theyihave made progress to the east and southeast of SL Quentin whero they are closely approaching the river. Their columns here have passed Fontaine Notre Dame, nearly six miles directly east of St. Quentin. This push is having a marked effect in I closing the Laon pocket. The wedge driven from Cambrai i east is effecting the front north to I Lens. The British First army Is niov-I niov-I ing forward in the direction of Douni which seems the next great town marked for capture by the allies along the British section of the line. The American First army ' under General Pershing is not being outdone by the other allied forces in the delivery de-livery of hard blows upon the trembling trembl-ing German defensive system. The thrust east of the Meuse in the Verdun area is being followed up by other attacks at-tacks which have resulted "in the advance ad-vance of the line well upward to the line won by the offensive west of the river. In the Argonne where a junction has been effected with the French at Lan-con; Lan-con; new attacaks were launched this morning. All the recent gains of General Gen-eral Pershing's men have been held, I notwithstanding the throwing in of Gcrmnn, reserves. Not the least interesting develop mont of the American campaign is the work of the air forces which evidently have been assembled in such numbers that an American bomblug expedition which dropped more than thirty tons of bombs on German areas on Wednesday Wed-nesday comprised no less than 350 machines. LONDON, Oct. 10. The attack of the Anglo-American forces in the breach between St. Quentin and Cambrai Cam-brai resulted yesterday evening in continued con-tinued advances, according to Field Marshal Haig's report today. The British Brit-ish arc now within two miles of La Cateau. Sallaumines and Noyelles have been captured. The capture of Saullaumines and Noyelles represents a British advance in the district east of Lens. The text of the statement reads-"We reads-"We continued to advance yesterday and yesterday evening in the face of increasing resistance and early in the night advanced detachments .established .estab-lished themselves across the Cambrai- ! Le Cateau road within two miles of Le Cateau. "Fighting is taking place south of , the main road on both sides of Cau-1 Cau-1 dry and also east of Cambrai, where ;we have made progress. I "In the sector between the Scarpe j and Lens cur patrols are in touch with I the enemy west of tho general line of , Vitry-en - Artois. Azel-Iez - Equerchin ! and ROuvroy. We have gained posses-'sion posses-'sion of Saullaumines and Noyelles." PERSHING REPORTS ADVANCE. WASHINGTON, Oct 10. Preparation Prepara-tion of the German main linp of resist-, resist-, ance west of the Meuse by the Ameri- cans against fresh enemy divisions, is I reported in General Pershing's com- muniquo for Wednesday. : East of the Meuse further gains were made during the clay, in spite of ! violent counter-attacks, while in the 1 Argonne forest, the American forces I captured important heights south of the Marcq and joined hands with the ,French at Lancon. More than 2QQ0 ; prisoners are reported. I Japanese Report Military Operation j TOKIO. Wednesday, Oct. 3. (By the 'Associated Press) Reporting military I operations in Siberia, an official state-j state-j ment issued today by the Japanese 'war office says: ! "Cavalry and Infantry pursuing the enemy from Zeya in the direction of Bankuki captured Iorakai and Joldmin September 27. A detachment of the Third division from Tchita reached Wefnevzinsk September 29. "The Zeya river has beeu cleared by mine sweepers." i j French Chasing Out Huns. I PARIS. Oct. 10. French troops last night continued tho pursuit of the Germans Ger-mans in the region east of St. Quentin, tho war office announced today. They have passed Fontaine Notre Dame and Beautrocourt. In fighting north of the Aisne French I pressure resulted in wresting the plateau pla-teau de Croix-Sans-Tete from the Germans, t while further east a crossing cross-ing of tho Aisne canal was effected in the region of Villers-en-Prayers. j Attacking vigorously in the Chara- I pagne, the French captured Lierry, two miles wost of Monthois. British Advance Between Lens and Scarpe. LONDON, Oct. 10. Between Lens and the Scarpe the British also are advancing and are in touch with the Germans to the werit of the line of Vitry - en-Artois, Azel - lez - Equ erch in and Rouvroy, Germany Growing Anxious. LONDON, Oct. 10. Indications that Germany is becoming anxious in consequence con-sequence of the threats of reprisals for tho destruction of towns in France are afforded by a telegram from the semiofficial semi-official Wolff .bureau, received in Stockholf, saying that Douai was burning "as the result of the continuous continu-ous British bombardmnct." Tho reports that the Germans had set fire to a town they were" still occupying oc-cupying was characterized by the agency as ridiculous. The Germans-, according to a Reuter dispatch from Stockholm also deny j having fired Roulers, Thourout and Lichtervelde. Americans Storm Kriemhilde Line, j WITH THE AMERICAN ARMY : NORTHWEST OF VERDUN. Wednes-j Wednes-j day, OcL .9. (By the Associated Press.) American forces operating west of the Meuse river returned to i the attack against the formidable Kriemhilde line today. This assault was made, just south of Romagne and a brilliant, speedy advance forced the Germans back through the positions prepared so long by tho Germans. Further to the right the Americans forced their way through. Cunel wood which was bristling with machine guns. This success made it easier to storm the Mammelle trench of the Kriemhild-Steelung line by sweeping away the flanking lire which had previously pre-viously rendered its capture so difficult. dif-ficult. British Advance In Night LONDON, Oct. 10 FUrthor progress was made by the British last night toward to-ward the northern part of the present battle front to tho east of Cambrai. Fighting is going on southeast of Cambrai, on both sides of Cambrai, Field Marshal Haig reports. AMSTERDAM. Oct. 10.
