Show PRESS AGENTS DON'T BOTHER BENNY Little Benny Kauff has not been press-agented to death this spring. As a result Benny is showing up to much better advantage with the Giants Gi-ants that he did at this time last year, and all because the baseball public is taking him as a matter of course and not expecting too much of him. Throughout the spring training trip of the Giants Kauff exhibited batting and fielding ability that Is natural with him, and he looked 50 per cent better because he did not have a worry in the world. The knowledge that tho baseball public was watching every move ho made last year hurt Kauff. It hurt his hitting most of all, and column after column that was written about him got to be a subject for no little amount of "kidding" directed at Benny by the members of his own team. Some writer of baseball quoted Kauff last year as having said he would show up the Giant sluggers. He would show 'em how to hit the pill. And some of the players took it to heart. As a result every time Kauff failed at the bat some of the boys on the bench reminded him of "what he had fcald," and the thing got on his nerves. But Kauff Is "broken in" now, and he has learned that one tip from Mc-Graw Mc-Graw is worth all the scattered advice ad-vice of a many-minded abseball public pub-lic Following McGraw's orders will probably make a .300 hitter out of Kauff this year. |
