Show GERMAN GUNS Large Captures of War Material Ma-terial in Lens Region Are Made. LONG RANGE GUN Truck Loads of New Tools, Ammunition, Bombs and Engineering Equipment. LONDON, April 16, 12 52 p. m. The British captured last night the village of Villaret, southeast of Har-glcourt, Har-glcourt, according to an official statement state-ment issued by the British war office. They also made progress northwest of Lens. Large captures of guns and war material ma-terial wero made by tho British at Lievin and on the Zouches river in the Lens region, the statement announces. The cannon taken Include a six-Inch naval gun of long range. Truck loads of new tools, many thousand rounds of ammunition and quantities of bombs, grenades and engineering equipment also were captured. Official Statement. The statement reads: "We capturod last night the village of Villaret, southeast of Harglcourt and progressed northwest of Lens. "Full particulars of the booty we took at Lievin and on the Souchez river are unavailable but tho fact Is established that our captures were exceedingly large, including a long range six-inch naval gun, many thousand thous-and rounds of ammunition of all calibres cali-bres up to eight-inch, a number of trench mortars and great quantities of bombs and grenades of all kinds. In addition truck loads of new tools, many lengths of tram lines with trucks complete and two large engineer engi-neer dumps have fallen intact into our possession. Bavarians Reinforce Enemy. "Tho attack at Monchy-Le-Preux on the 11th was pressed by tho enemy with great determination. The third bavarian division which was brought down to resist our offensive during the battle of Loos in 1915 and later took part in the fighting near High-wood High-wood during tho Somme battle in 1916 was again hurried down to reinforce re-inforce the divisions already in line. It was ordered to retake Monchy-Le-Preux, at all costs. Its losses in this fruitless attack were exceptionally heavy, as has been tho caso with all the Bavarian troops throughout the whole recent operations. Of the prisoners pris-oners taken by us since the ninth, more than one-third are Bavarians." oo |
