Hanna, archbishop arch-bishop of San Francisco, deploring the situation which confronts the American Am-erican nation at this time, informed the large number of women present that the part to be played by womanhood woman-hood in bringing about a happy termination ter-mination of tho impending strife was an important one. Woman, he said, has a peculiar place and an almost omnipotent power where she wishes to make it. She is tho moulder of strength. As man undertakes the big things of life he has by his side the women to help and encourage, yea, to command. The future of our land here will depend very largely on what view women take of iL It is within their power to instill into men's hearts their powers of right and courage. If you women lose your courage, fall into a comfort-seeking life and'forget the principles of mercy and love the world which must follow will havo neither strength nor courage for the big things that Ho ahead. "Today the world is in the throes of an agony such as it has never before be-fore experienced. We hoped the wayward way-ward blood would never reach our shores, but its lapping is heard and if we are going to succeed, if we are going go-ing to do aught that will be for God's glory, we must depend very much on the women to put courage and strength into men's hearts, the willingness will-ingness to do or die for a cause that is worth while. Bishop Glass Speaks. "The woman who goes forth to do Catholic work today must be armed with love and knowledge. The church stands for something and she must know what that means. Tho church through all these years has stood for something great, noble, true and magnificent, mag-nificent, and it stands for them today and is willing to give all that life means that those ideals may conquer. "Let us bo prepared to give what wo have whenever we may be asked, our own share in our work for God and His church and our country. We cannot see what is ahead and it still looks as if out of the storm some good may come, a greater friendship, a greater liberty. "Possibly we might be likened unto un-to the apostles of old as they sailed-across sailed-across the dead sea of Galilee. They left the shore, and after they were out a while their boats were raked by tho winds and waves, and as they felt that they were about to be sunk, behold, be-hold, Christ came walking on the water. wa-ter. Who knows but that out of tho carnage of the present day, when all seems lost and tho storm is at its worst, Christ will again come walking on the water to still the storm and bring us joy, love and peace." Bishop Joseph S. Glass also made an address to the league, thanking the women for their cordial support during dur-ing tho eighteen months of his administration. admin-istration. The Rev. P. M. Cushnahan of Ogden, vicar general of the diocese, also mado a few remarks. oo |
