Show URGES CHILIEI OF TIE STATE TO HELP II FOOD TASK Attention of tho superintendents of the several school districts of the state to the recommendations mado by Governor Bamberger in his' Arbor day proclamation is directed in a circular cir-cular letter sent out yesterday by Dr. E. G. Gowana, state superintendent of public instruction, in which he urges that school authorities take steps to have every available acre of land cultivated cul-tivated and utilized for the production of foodstuffs. Dr. Gowans says that every boy and girl should be drafted in this patriotic service; that school superintendents should see to it that there is no idleness idle-ness nor waste and recommends that principals of Important schools be employed, em-ployed, for the entire year, so they may be able to assist In this work during dur-ing the summer vacation. Tho letter to the school superintendents superintend-ents is as follows: "My purpose in writing you on this occasion Is to urge upon you and your board of education the importance of giving attention to a matter closely connected with the thought of Arbor day and of grave national concern. Wo are now engaged In the great world war in defense of tho cause of human rights and the ultimate peace of the world. Our country may be bathed in blood. There may be years of fighting fight-ing ahead. The nation in this crisis needs more men, money and food. Every Ev-ery available acre of land must be utilized in food production. Every school boy and girl should bo drafted Into this patriotic service. There should be no idleness no waste. The principals of Important rural schools should be employed for the whole year and their assignment to duty for the vacation months should require that they direct the children in this work of cultivating the soil. "If you have an agricultural supervisor, super-visor, this work should, of course, bo under his direction. The Agricultural college is offering help through Professor Pro-fessor J. C. Hogenson, state leader In club work. Begin the work at once much can be done before the close of school. 1 "There never was a better time for the schools to put the 'earn' in 'learning.' 'learn-ing.' Kindly request your board to hold a special meeting at once to consider con-sider this vital matter and report to this office at the earliest possible moment mo-ment just what you will do." It is the belief of Dr. Gowans that the production of foodstuffs will be greatly increased in Utah this year as a result of tho recommendations made by Governor Bamberger. The planting will not only give the boys and girls employment during the vacation periods, peri-ods, but will aid materially in reducing reduc-ing the high cost of living in many homes. |
