Show " ' I I I I I I 1 1 ' I , U I ,' , - r Mir body m ' CELEBRATION ST 5CADEI One of the most enthusiastic student body assemblies of tho year was held at Weber college this morning, being a double celebration in honor of the 1916-17 W. A. basketball team and the victorious orators, who defeated the Ogden High school orators In the Dr. E. I. Rich contest yesterday afternoon at tho Tabernacle Special music for the occasion was furnished by the Weber We-ber college band, under tho direction of Prof. E. W. Nichols, and Miss Clara Brough, vocal soloist. As an opening feature tho entiro assembly, standing, sang "The Star Spangled Banner" with great fervor. Following the rondition of the national na-tional anthem, a motion was unanimously unani-mously passed that no Weber student should rccoivo his full credits and no Weber faculty member his salary for the last month of the term unless he could sing all four verses of "The Star Spangled Banner" from memory. The principal purpose of the'assem-' bly was to present the members of the basketball team with their "W. A." sweaters and others connected in a special manner with basketball activities, activ-ities, with other tokens of appreciation. apprecia-tion. This was accomplished in a rather unusual fashion, individual presentation pre-sentation speeches being made and the rewards presented by charming "coeds." "co-eds." William Roberts received his sweater from tho hands of Florenco Browning: David Ppterson, from Ruth Partloe; Joe Smith, from Vera Wright; Phillip Jeppson, from Mamie Crittenden; Critten-den; Ernest Shreeve, from Mary Stevens; Ste-vens; Theron Jones, from Ruth Evans; Ev-ans; Arthur Lin ford, from Lettio Rir-ip, Rir-ip, and William Berrett, from Julia Wade. Coach Malcolm Watson was presented with a bouquet of carnations carna-tions by Miss Kathryn McKay; Alice Stahr performed the same courtesy to Douglas Leishman, manager of the team, and Ernest Wilkinson, president of tho student body, received a bouquet bou-quet from the hands of Coach Watson. Principal James L. Barkor was remembered remem-bered by the team, with a carnation. Leishman and Wilkinson were also special heroes of the occasion on account ac-count of having won the oratory contest. con-test. Speeches on "Loyalty to School Athletics," were made by Principal Barker and Coach Watson, and, as a special treat, a reading was given by Miss Ardella Warner. Before the assembly as-sembly was adjourned Douglas Leishman Leish-man made a neat speech of appreciation, apprecia-tion, on behalf of the basketball boys, for the fine feeling manifested toward them by the school faculty and student stu-dent body. oo |
