These courses are characterized by President E. G. Peterson, Pet-erson, as follows: "Mothercraft means the science and art of child rearing and family management. It I Is tho most important consideration of our civilization. When the majority major-ity of our girls are trained in these subjects the most important step will have been taken for the perpetuation of our standard of living, our health, our morals, and our religious Ideals. This course has never before been given in an American publicly supported sup-ported college of standing and constitutes con-stitutes a very important change in educational methods. The plan is frankly to place a large emphasis in the School of Home Economics upon training for Motherhood. Actual practice In child feeding, child cloth ing, and child training along the most approved lines. It is planned to have the girls receive training by actual practice, in story telling for children, and other phases of child, education, acquainting tho students at the same time with all tho recent important developments in our knowledge of books for children, the Montessorl method of child education, play for children, modern sanitation as it applies ap-plies to child welfare, the simpler ailments of children and caro of the same. It is not presumed to have this training replace the natural home training of the girls. The mothers will always be the most Important teachers of their daughters and nothing noth-ing will ever Jae able to supply the lack of normal, clean and well conducted con-ducted family life in the education of any person. One of the important considerations is to prepare the future fu-ture mothers for full ability to assume as-sume their great responsibility in raising their own children. Mothercraft Mother-craft will therefore be designed to strengthen the influence of the home. It is planned to have all this import ant work conducted in a building or home devoted to the work exclusively. Here the girls in groups of from ten to 20 studying home economics will live for a period of weeks under the direction of the specialist, a woman of practical as wll as scientific and theoretical experience in child rearing rear-ing and home management. The girls will pay a regular fee for room and board, sufficient, it is thought, to pay the expenses of the practice house. Tho different rooms, -it is planned UM timately, will represent different styles of decoration, painting, woods, finishing and furnishing. The practice prac-tice house -will be a model for the Utah home-makers as regards sewage disposal, water supplies, kitchen equipment equip-ment and arrangement, and elegant but inexpensive furnishing and finishing finish-ing throughout. Frequent meetings of the women of the state will be held in the home, which will thus serve as a model for those who are already absorbed in the practical family life. The practical house will be used for laboratory and demonstration purposes on the occasion occa-sion of the housekeepers' conference. The girl will alternate in assuming complete practical control in turn, of the menu, the laundry, the kitchen, the expense budget, the serving, the entertaining, the outside decoration and interior finishing, child feeding, the evening hour for children, child play, dressing of children, and nursery nurs-ery practice in general. All this, of course, will be supervised by competent compe-tent specialists and by professional attention. at-tention. Practice -will thus be given each girl under absolutely ideal, but entirely practical conditions in the average home iu all the tremendously tremendous-ly Important details of the home.. This work will ultimately grow to large proportions. It requires no great foresiight to predict that thousands of students will soon be annually trained in these most important subjects. sub-jects. Just as fast as possible the argicultural college will enlarge tho work to meet the demand for it. oo |
