Floating driftwood was the chief menace to speed boats which made practice trips on the Detroit river today In preparation prepara-tion for the national gold cup races which will start with a 30-mile heat luiiiuiruw uiLei uuuu. jl ne iive-miie course is off Belle Isle. Six hydroplanes, with records of 50 miles an hour or better, are ready to fight for the title now held by Miss Detroit. Miss Minneapolis is the favorite fav-orite because she recently averaged 60.6 miles an hour in competition. The boats will race 30-mile heats Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and the craft receiving the highest aggregate of points will be the winner. Wednesday the boats will compete In a one-mllo race for the championship champion-ship of North America.
