Show II Manager of Salt Lake Utes Ad-I Ad-I mits Differences With Presi- I ' dent F. S. Murphy Will I Arrive Home Today. San Francisco, Cal., SepU 1, I Cliff Blankenship, manager of. the h Salt Lake baseball club since the Utes i -were admitted into the Coast league in the spring of 1916, leaves tomor-row tomor-row for Salt Lake City to hold a con-' con-' ference with the directors of his club and determine whether or not his I resignation, tendered today by wire, ! is to be accepted. Blankenship admits a differenco Avith President F. S. Murphy as regards re-gards club discipline and the handling of his players, and it is said that this state of affairs brought about tho offer of the manager of the club to -resign, taking effect September 35. President Murphy, upon receipt of the wire from his baseball leader, res plied with a telegram, asking Cliff! to report at once in Salt Lake to I meet with the directors of the club. i Murphy likewise directed that, in the absence of Blankenship, Buddy Ryan be named as the acting man. jager and this action has been taken. Authority was conferred upon Ryan tonight, and while Blankenship is i away from the club the outfielder will be in full charge of the team. Blank wil reach Salt Lake Saturday morning and it islikely that a meeting meet-ing to decide his future plans will ho )iolH Sainrrinv afternoon. Murnhv. Ill it Is known, would be pleased to have I Blankenship continue with the team I , at least for the balance of the sea-I- son. I" Gossip has it that Blankenship will I. 'nsist upon being given full rein so far I. as the handling of the players Is con- I cerned, if he continues in control of I affairs. Whether the former Washington I, catcher wil hold on for another year, l( even assuming that he holds the 1 1 managerial reins during the remainder I; of 1916, is something that Is alto. 1 1 gether too remote to be known. ! "Until I meet with the directors," I said Blankenship tonight, 'it is im h possible to say what will be done. T I would like to remain with the club at I least for the balance of the season if I affairs can be adjusted, and longer if I there is a complete and satisfactory I understanding." I Salt Lake, Sept. 1 . F. S. Murphy, I'l president of the Salt Lake baseball - club, declared early this morning that I lie had received no messago from I Blankenship of his resignation or In formation pertaining to the resigna. tion of the club manager', other than that of the press message received in Salt Lake from San Francisco. "There has been nothing which would lead us to suspect that Blankenship Blank-enship would resign and In the absence ab-sence of a messago from him I am inclined to doubt it," said Mr. Mur. -phy. "However, tho resignation may be forthcoming in a wire this morn- ' ing if the press dispatches are true. Word of the resignation comes as a surprise, indeed." "In the event that you receive the resignation will you make Tom Hughes or Buddy Ryan manager ot the club?" Mr. Murphy was asked. " "That is something which will 'jo I considered when a meeting of the f board of directors is called, which I probably will be the case, if the reslg- nation comes In," replied. Mr. Murphy. ; "Personally I have given a successor I' to Blankenship no thought, having ex-II ex-II pected that he would finish the sea. j son. If Blankenship insists on roll ro-ll signing at once It is probable that I will direct one of the members of the club to take charge of the manage-I' manage-I' ment of the club at once, but that is a matter which I will have to deter- ) mine upon after T get the resignation, If it is true that Blankenship has re- I signed." |
