Show FIVE HHUHES'lj BUSINESS DISTRICT DURING THE lUIGHT That a gang of experienced burglars Is maklngr Ogden Its scene of operations opera-tions was disclosed this morning, when it becamo known that a string of unusually un-usually hold and well-planned burglaries burg-laries had been, perpetrated in the nusmess district of the city. The robbers started their work at the Coleman Harness shop, 371 Twenty-third street, and operated southward, south-ward, visiting business houses they had evidently "spotted" as easy of access. Tho places visited,! in addition addi-tion to the Coleman Harness Shop, were the Goddard Cigar store, the Gray Millinery Co., the Leader Millinery Mil-linery Co., the Driver Drug store and the J. S. Lewis Jewelry store. The crooks took some tools from the harness shop, with which they worked to gain entrances to tho other-places. other-places. At the Goddard Cigar store the thieves pulled an iron-barred rear window completely out of Its moorings, moor-ings, entered the place and battered their way into the safe. They failed to find any money, but scattered all over the store the valuable papers kept In the safe. From the cigar store, they went to the Leader Millinery and the Driver Drug store, and entering by way of transoms over the rear doors. From tho millinerv store thev took $139. which had been left In the safe. The safe door was found open, the robbers rob-bers either -having worked out the combination or an employe of the store having left tho safe open. Nothing Noth-ing else in tho place was disturbed. In the Driver drug store, the thieves abstracted $50 that had been left in a drawer. They failed to forco an entrance to tho Gray Millinery company's store, but "jimmied" the lock on the front door until it was necessary for tho proprietress to send for a, mechanic in order to get the door open this morning At the Lewis Jewelry store, tho robbers rob-bers cut two small holes in a front window, but were frightened away before be-fore getting at the valuables on show The first intimation that a robberj had been perpetrated was received by Sergeant J. P. Kelllher and Detective Grant .'Syphers, vwhen, about 5:30 o'clock, they found the rear window of the Coleman harness shop open. Tho officers Investigated, but found nothing noth-ing disturbed. Leaving the place, they ran into John Adams, night watchman of the Lewis Jewelry company, who told them of the attempt to rob that place of business. Continuing on the round of the business houses, the other oth-er robberies and attempted robbery were brought to light. Detective Robert Chambers, Sergeant Serge-ant R. C. Peterson and Patrolmen Moore and Hearn, assisted in the investigation, in-vestigation, but no trace of tho robbers rob-bers has as yet been found. |
