At an early hour this morning St. Mark's hoHpit.il said that there was no chance of Craw-Cord Craw-Cord recovering, but that he would probably llvo for six or seven hours A "hunch ' caused William P. St. lohn, motorcycle policeman, to leap headlong from the pollco patrol on Second South street juat west of Sixth Bast street, last night. The car was responding to a "holdup1, call telephoned tele-phoned the police a few moments before be-fore from the Postoffice drug 6tore. : Eighth Kast and Second South streets. I Before the car had traversed the remaining two blocks, .lames Crawford, Craw-ford, confessed holdup was lying on the sidewalk at the comer of Sixth K.nst and Second South streets, mor-talj mor-talj wounded, a bullet from St. John's gun having piorced his body Just below the heart. Holdinw Two at Bay. Pedestrians who ran to the scene a moment later found St. John standing stand-ing astride the holdup "covering ' the man's pal, Clarence Cox. Without moving his weapon. St John directed one of the bystanders to take from the hand of the wounded robber the gun with which the man had tried to shoot the officer. Another was told to search the second robber, and a third was sent poHt-haste with 8 telephone message to police headquar ters. The wounded man was first taken to the. emergency hospital al headquarters and later removed to St Mark's hospital The second robber Is locked in the City Jail After "Easy Money." At headquarters both Crawford and COS told of entering the drug store 'o get some "easy money." Crawford supplemented his oonfeession by tell ing of having a brother lhlng in Los Angeles, and ended by begging that a Catholic priest be called for him at once. From his cell, Cox told of leaving his girl wife in their room a! the Lenox Len-ox hotel in the early evening, of meeting meet-ing his "pal" and of the two going to the drug store for the purpose ..f robbery. Mrs fox had but a few days ago come from the hospital, when Bhe had been operated upon, and it is believed that the need of mpn J f"f providing her with neCOf sitles was the primary cause of the crime. In the room of Crawford in the zt t hotel was found an open magazine, maga-zine, which contained a story of the "Diamond Dick" variety. The page ai which the magazine was opened told of the outlaws sitting around a campfire discuss'ng the deeds of one of their number |
