With Colonel Roosevelt abstaining from politics, the prestige of the California governor gover-nor as the only Progressive who was able to hold his state in the recent elections, has made him the chief arbiter ar-biter of the part 's future. The members of the conference will be members of the national executhe committee, whose chairman is George W Perkins, and other invited leaders Their task Is to scrutinize the election elec-tion returns and to decide whether or not it Is worth while to continue the national organization. For one thing, the national headquarters head-quarters will probably be transferred from New York to Chicago for the reason that such strength as the party now has is In the west and middle west. Modill McCormlck wants the headquarters moved to Chicago, Chi-cago, and, it is understood, will be villing to pay the expenses On the surface there appears to hare been little activity among New-York New-York Progressives since the election. ! State Chairman Robinson has gone j to Brazil and County Chairman Bird lis about to move. to Boston However, ether party leaders have decided to I keep the party going on the chance that something may happen. Also It is feared that if the party name and machinery were to be abandoned William Sulser might sieze them. Mr. Perkins and some other Progressives Pro-gressives seem disposed to treat with Republicans, If "honorable terms" can be arranged Republican leaders urge that the reduction in the number num-ber or southern delegates to national contentions has removed the cm ci use of the split. Some of the I ro-tTosives ro-tTosives lake the sanv- view, but othi rs insist that the action in re-gard re-gard to the southern delegates was n.erelv n confession of iniquity In the few states, such as Califor-Pla Califor-Pla Pennsylvania and Illinois, where the' Progressives made a showing this month the organization will certainly be kept up In Massachusetts state Chairman Matthew Hale is also de- irons that the flock be kept together. |
