Show oo RATDRiGAL CONTEST IS IW 01 AT TABERNACLE . The oratorical contest between the Ogden high school and the Weber academy for the $50 In prizes offered by Dr. Edward I. Rich, Is being held this afternoon at the Tabernacle before be-fore a crowd of students, school patrons pa-trons and educators that crowded the building to its capacity. The students stu-dents of the two schools were dismissed dis-missed at 2 p. m. and in a spirit -of loyalty to their representatives in the contest went to the Tabernacle almost in a body and, with flags and pennants waving, made noisy counter demonstrations to encourage their speakers to put up the best talk that was In them. The meeting was called to order at 2:30 o'clock by Chairman T. Earl Pardoe and the first number on the program was a selection, "Fort Gay" (Huff), by the Weber academy band under the direction of Prof. E. W. Nichols. This was loudly applauded especially from the purple and 'white side of the house, and as the contest ants entered at its conclusion, the applause and cheers became general and could not be quieted for several minutes. Chairman Pardoe finally secured attention and introduced Mlsg Jennie Barlow and Harvey Taylor of the Weber academy and Sidney Winters Win-ters and Bryce Swartzfager of the Ogden high school as the ones who were to take part in the contest. He also introduced at tho same time, Professors F. W. Reynolds, head ot the English department of the University Uni-versity of Utah, N. Alvin Peterson, head of the English department of the Utah Agricultural college, -and D. G. Hunt, head of the department of elocution of tho University of Utah, as the judges. After the introductions had been made, Mr. Pardoe, in a brief talk, said that the purpose of the contest was to encourage and Inculcate a desire among the students to express their thoughts in a polished and oratorical ora-torical manner. It encourages them, he said, to become proficient in their mother tongue and enables them to express their own thoughts without embarrassment. These contests were inaugurated two years ago, he continued, contin-ued, by Percy Goddard, who then gave a diamond pin as a. prize, which was won by Jesse Holther of the Ogden high school. Last year Elijah Lar-kin Lar-kin came forward with a silver cup which was won by Miss Iva Steers of the Weber academy. In conclusion he said that early in the present year Dr. Edward I. Rich had put up $50 to be divided into two prizes, one of $35 and the other ot $16, for the two best orators In the two schools in a contest this spring. Since making that offer. Dr. Rich had decided to set aside $50 annually for such a contest as the one which was about to take place. Following Mr. Pardoe's talk the program of orations was oarrled out in the following order: "The Building that Endures," Jennie Jen-nie Barlow. "Uncle Sam in Business," Bryce Swartzfager. "The Incentive of a Noble Inheritance," Inherit-ance," Harvey Taylor. "The Inner Man," Sidney Winters. Miss Barlow's oration was as follows: fol-lows: Both prizes were won by the High school. |
